CARY, N.C. - The No. 9 NC State women's tennis team dropped a tightly contested 4-3 decision to No. 3 North Carolina on Friday night at Cary Tennis Park. The Wolfpack claimed the doubles point and earned singles victories from Victoria Osuigwe and No. 38 Lavinia Tanasie, but the rivalry dual ultimately came down to a three-set battle on court one that was won by the Tar Heels.
Â
NC State set the tone early in doubles, taking two of three courts to secure the opening point. No. 40 Jasmine Conway and Anna Zyryanova opened the round with a 6-3 win on court two over the No. 3-ranked duo of Oby Kajuru and Susanna Maltby. Shortly after, No. 4 Gabriella Broadfoot and Osuigwe clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 victory on court one over 11th-ranked Reese Brantmeier and Alanis Hamilton.
Â
In singles, UNC struck first with a straight set win on court six, but Osuigwe quickly answered for the Wolfpack. Competing on court five, the freshman defeated No. 51 Theadora Rabman, 6-4, 6-3, to earn the first ranked singles win of her collegiate career and put NC State back in front.
Â
The Tar Heels regained momentum with three-set victories on courts two and three to move ahead, 3-2, but Tanasie delivered in a key moment. The junior earned her second straight ranked win, taking down No. 69 Alanis Hamilton on court four, 7-6(3), 6-4, to level the match at three points apiece.
Â
The dual's deciding point came down to court one between No. 29 Broadfoot and top-ranked Brantmeier. Brantmeier claimed the opening set, but Broadfoot responded with a 7-6(4) win in the second to force a third set. Broadfoot pushed the reigning NCAA Singles Champion throughout the final frame, but Brantmeier ultimately prevailed to secure the 4-3 victory for UNC.
