CHARLOTTE, N.C. - NC State gymnastics' Syniya Thomas has been named the ACC Specialist of the Week, as announced by the conference office Tuesday afternoon. The sophomore is coming off an impressive season-opening performance at Auburn, where she helped the Wolfpack post the highest season-opening score in program history (196.075).
Thomas is NC State's first ACC weekly award winner of the season and the third of her career. She previously earned ACC Newcomer of the Week honors twice during her freshman campaign.
Competing on vault, beam and floor at Auburn, Thomas set or matched career-best scores on all three events. Her standout performance came on floor, where she recorded a career-high 9.925, her second career score of 9.900 or higher, to finish third on the podium.
On beam, Thomas earned a 9.850 to claim a four-way share of the top spot on the podium, marking a career-best on the apparatus. She also matched her career-high on vault with a 9.850, tying for fifth in a strong field.
Entering the 2026 season, Thomas was poised for a breakout year following a freshman campaign that saw her earn ACC Newcomer of the Week honors twice (Weeks 1 and 4). She was also named an ACC Preseason Gymnast to Watch, and through the Pack's first week of competition, she has backed up that recognition.
NC State returns to Raleigh for its 2026 home debut and ACC opener, hosting Clemson on Saturday, Jan. 17 at 4 p.m. The meet will air live on ACC Network Extra.
