RALEIGH – In front of a new record-breaking crowd of over 5,000 fans at Dail Soccer Stadium, fifth-ranked NC State men's soccer collected a scoreless draw against North Carolina at home Friday night.
The previous attendance record for the men's program was set this season against Wofford with 3,241 fans, and in an attempt to get 4,000 people into the Dail Soccer Stadium, over 5,000 came to watch the Wolfpack take on the Tarheels.
Fans who were unable to get in lined the stadium gates watching through the fence, while others stood on top of the parking deck.
The Wolfpack thought it began to carry a lead when Aidan Payne scored in the 25th minute but it was called back for being offside. Donavan Phillip started the brigade towards goal when the North Carolina goalkeeper deflected his shot and Aidan Payne cleaned up his shot in the back of the net.
Phillip and Taig Healy led the cavalry for the Pack, tallying four and seven shots, respectively. Payne, Drew Lovelace, and Max Ogawa each got their names in the book, putting up shots as well. In the end, the squad forced North Carolina's goalkeeper to make seven saves.
Despite not pulling out a win, the Wolfpack still held off its opponent and remains untouched with four straight clean sweeps by Logan Erb in goal.
On the backline, Riley Moloney and Nikola Markovic each recorded crucial blocked shots in the game as well, aiding Erb in his shutout.
