In his hometown, Luke Nixon got the Wolfpack (31-15) going with his fourth home run of the season, a three-run shot, and later singled while scoring twice. Alex Sosa had his first four-hit game in a Wolfpack uniform, finishing with two RBIs and two runs scored. Ty Head and Justin DeCriscio each had a two-hit night and drove in two to contribute to the scoring.
In his first start in 368 days, Shane Van Dam went two innings, allowing three runs on two hits with a strikeout and two walks. After facing seven batters in the first, Van Dam had a 1-2-3 inning in the second.
Carson Kelly (1-0) came on following Van Dam and tossed three innings of scoreless baseball, allowing just one hit and two walks while striking out three. Kelly picked up his first win of the season and first since April 28th against Ball State.
After holding NC State to just two runs in four innings in the first meeting, UNCW starting pitcher Bromley Thorton (0-4) got tagged for four runs on four hits in 1.2 innings pitched with two walks and no strikeouts.
UNCW got out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first. A leadoff walk started the inning, and after two hits and a steal of home, the Seahawks had the lead.
The lead didn't last a half inning as the Wolfpack immediately responded with three runs of their own; Wilmington native Nixon was feeling right at home as he tied the game with one swing of the bat with a three-run home run off the light pole to tie the game.
Head's leadoff walk to start the second was his 47th of the season, putting him among the top 10 in program history for most walks in a season.
The scoring continued with three straight two-out hits, the third from Sosa scoring the fourth run of the inning to give NC State the lead, which they would never relinquish.
A Head double came around to score to extend the Wolfpack lead in the top of the third as a UNCW throwing error on a ground ball allowed Head to make it 5-3.
In the fifth, the Wolfpack loaded the bases with nobody out and capitalized as Head had an RBI single, moving everyone up a base. Matt Heavner drew a four-pitch walk to bring in the seventh run of the night for NC State, and Josh Hogue made it 8-3 after a fielder's choice beating out a ground ball.
Head picked up his second RBI of the night with a sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth to make it 9-3.
Following Kelly, Jacob Dudan came on, and UNCW was able to scratch off a run with a solo home run to cut the deficit to five. Dudan had not given up an earned run in his last 11 appearances.
A DeCriscio double gave the Pack double-digits, bringing home the 10th and 11th runs of the night in the top of the seventh. In the ninth, pinch-hitter Ryder Woodson singled for his fifth hit of the season, bringing in his fourth RBI of the year. Woodson would come home to score on a wild pitch for the 14th and final run.
Freshman Tristan Potts pitched a season-high 1.2 innings, allowing just one hit and finishing with two strikeouts. Potts has not given up a run in six innings pitched this season.
Up Next: The final road trip of the regular season has the Wolfpack not going far. NC State travels to Chapel Hill for a three-game series with No. 4 UNC, beginning on Thursday, May 8th, at 6 p.m. The three-game series will be played on Thursday, Friday, and Sunday.
