CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Josh Hogue hit his 10th home run of the season, but that was all the offense the No. 16 Wolfpack could produce as they fell to No. 4 North Carolina 8-1 Thursday night from Boshamer Stadium.
Outside of Hogue's home run in the first inning, NC State (31-16, 15-9) recorded four singles with two coming in the top of the ninth. Wolfpack starting pitcher Ryan Marohn (6-3) gave NC State 6.1 innings, allowing seven runs, five of which were earned on 10 hits and three strikeouts with no walks.
Tar Heel starter Jake Knapp (10-0) went a career-high eight innings, allowing just the first-inning home run with four strikeouts. Knapp retired 18 straight Wolfpack batters from the second inning until the eighth, when Brayden Fraasman singled.
NC State was 0-3 with runners in scoring position, while the Tar Heels were 6-11.
Hogue's home run in the first frame was the 29th run scored in the first inning this year, with the Wolfpack 11-4 when scoring in the first inning coming into Thursday. UNC responded with a run to tie the game after a leadoff double and came home to score following a passed ball and sacrifice fly.
The Tar Heels took the lead on their second unearned run of the game as a throwing error and a stolen base allowed a runner to get to second and come home to score and take a 2-1 lead.
The home team never looked back, scoring two more in the third, extending the lead with three runs in the fifth, and adding their final run in the eighth.
The top of the ninth began with two singles and nobody out, knocking Knapp out of the game. Tar Heel reliever Walker McDuffie came on in relief and got three straight outs on 12 pitches to end the ball game.
Up Next: Game two between NC State and UNC is tomorrow, Friday, May 9th, at 6 p.m. and will be broadcast on ACCNX from Chapel Hill.
