Chris McHugh's team-leading 14th hit-by-pitch started the ninth inning, and he advanced to second on a wild pitch. In 1-2 count, Josh Hogue delivered the go-ahead and winning run with a single up the middle. Hogue finished with three hits and two RBIs.
Two more singles from Alex Sosa and Justin DeCriscio loaded the bases with nobody out. UNC (37-11,16-10) made a pitching change, and on the first pitch, Brayden Fraasman brought in the seventh run with a sacrifice fly. Matt Ossenfort added more insurance in a full count with a single up the middle to make it 8-5.
Mchugh went 2-3 with a double and an RBI while scoring two runs. Matt Heavner singled with two outs in the eighth inning for his 27th RBI of the season.
Dominic Fritton pitched six scoreless innings for NC State. After getting the first out of the seventh, the Tar Heels singled and hit a home run to end his night. Fritton finished his night allowing two runs on seven hits with two walks and seven strikeouts.
Anderson Nance (8-1) replaced Fritton and earned his eighth win to continue leading the ACC for wins by a freshman this season. Nance went 1.2 innings, allowing four hits and three runs.
In the ninth, Andrew Shaffner (7) closed the game. Shaffner struck out the first batter of the inning before walking a man on four pitchers. On the first pitch to the third batter, a ball on its way to the outfield was stopped after a diving play by DeCriscio started a 6-4-3 game-ending double play and gave Shaffner his seventh save of the season.
The Wolfpack gave Tar Heel reliever Ryan Lynch (4-1) his first loss of the season after scoring three runs on four hits off of him in the ninth. UNC used four pitchers in the final inning.
NC State got a run in the first inning for the second straight game to take the lead after a sacrifice fly from DeCriscio to make it 1-0. The Wolfpack looked to be in a position to get more out of the inning after loading the bases with nobody out, but two straight strikeouts ended the frame.
UNC loaded the bases themselves in the bottom of the second after a Wolfpack error. Fritton escaped the jam after with a strikeout and a ground ball to second base to keep the Wolfpack lead at 1-0.
The Wolfpack added to its lead in the top of the fifth, scoring three times to make it 4-0. NC State used four straight hits to bat around. A double from Sosa, the fifth hit of the inning, capped off the scoring in the frame.
NC State was 7-17 with runners in scoring position and 11-22 with runners on. Eight batters had at least one hit, of which five batters had multiple hits on the night. Seven different batters had at least one RBI.
Up Next: The series' rubber match will be on Sunday, May 11th, at 1 p.m. from Bosahmer Stadium. The game will be broadcast on ACC Network.
