
Pack Wraps Up Season at NCAA Regional

URBANA, Ill. – The NC State men's golf team closed the 2024-25 season on Wednesday as it finished in 13th place at the NCAA Urbana Regional played at Atkins Golf Course.
The regional appearance was the 15th in 17 seasons for the Pack and NC State was aiming for its third NCAA Championship bid under retiring head coach Press McPhaul but fell short as only the top five teams in regional advanced to next week's NCAA Championship.
Oklahoma State and regional-host Illinois tied for first place while UNLV finished in third place, Tory closed in fourth and Texas Tech came in fifth to round out the five advancing teams.
NC State was led in the tournament by senior Michael Vick who finished in a tie for 46th place at seven-over par. Vick's first round score of two-under par 69 was the best round for an NC State golfer in the regional.
Next for the Pack was senior Nick Mathews who finished two shots back of Vick in a tie for 53rd place.
Joey Lenane was one shot back of Mathews in a tie for 56th place while Hunter Stetson finished in 60th place, one shot back of Lenane, after improving every round of the tournament.
Adam Pedersen shot a 77 in the first round before subbing out of the lineup for the final two rounds for Cade McLaughlin who shot a 156 in the final two rounds.
The NCAA Regional marked the final collegiate tournaments for Mathews, McLaughlin and Vick and the final tournament as head coach for McPhaul.
Under McPhaul's guidance, NC State appeared in six NCAA Regionals, including the 2025 Urbana Regional, and advanced to the NCAA Championships twice. In his eight seasons as head coach at NC State, the Pack won 16 tournament titles as a team and his golfers have won 15 individual titles. His athletes combined for 113 top-10 finishes in eight years, including 58 combined top-five finishes.
