Raleigh, NC – NC State Baseball's 20th win of the season evened the weekend series with the visiting Virginia Cavaliers following a 9-2 victory from Doak Field Saturday afternoon.
Wolfpack starter Heath Andrews (3-1) was sensational and recorded a quality start, going six innings, only allowing two earned runs, and striking out four on the day.
Shortstop Justin DeCriscio led the offense today, going 2-5 with two extra base hits, including a home run. Ty Head drove home two runs early with an RBI double up the middle. Chris McHugh went 3-5 on the day, picking up an RBI and reaching the 40 hit mark on the season.
Luke Nixon moved down in the order and went 3-3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Freshman Brandon Novy made his second career start and worked three walks, finishing with a hit and a run scored.
The Wolfpack offense recorded 14 hits on the day, hitting 6-16 with runners in scoring position and going 3-8 leading off an inning to help them build their lead throughout the game.
Andrew Shaffner came out of the bullpen to relieve Andrews in the seventh. After two consecutive innings retiring the side in order, Schaffner stayed in for the ninth to pick up the save, his fourth of the season, going three scoreless innings, giving up only two hits, while striking out five to finish the day.
Virginia (17-12, 7-7) scored the game's first run in the top of the first; a leadoff walk made its way to third after a hit. Andrews was able to limit the damage with a double play and get out of the inning.
NC State (20-11, 6-5) struck back in the second with a solo home run to lead off the inning from DeCriscio on a 3-1 count. The Wolfpack would work the bases loaded for one of the Wolfpack's hottest hitters. Head ripped a two-RBI single up the middle to take the lead. A fielding error and an RBI single from McHugh would drive another run in for the Wolfpack, finishing the second with four runs where they would not give up the lead again.
Three straight hits, including an RBI single from Nixon, drove home another run for the Pack in the third inning.
Virginia starting pitcher Evan Blanco (1-2) went 2.1 innings, surrendering nine hits and five earned runs on the day, getting the loss. Replacing him in the bottom of the third was Alex Markus.
A wild pitch from Markus brought home Nixon, giving the Pack back-to-back multi-run innings, making it 6-1.
Andrews worked four straight scoreless frames spanning from the second to the fifth, only allowing two baserunners after the first inning. In the sixth, the Cavaliers added their second of the game following a hit-by-pitch coming around to score on a double, the run shrunk the lead to four. Andrews limited the damage, ending the inning with a popout and allowing just one run.
In the eighth, the Wolfpack used three hits to score three runs and extend the lead to 9-2. Brayden Fraasman capped things off with a two-run single to make it a seven-run lead.
UP NEXT: The Wolfpack will try to win the series tomorrow, Sunday, April 6th, at 3 p.m. from the Doak. The game will be nationally televised on the ACC Network.
