CARY, NC - The No. 3 seeded NC State Wolfpack made a statement in their opening match of the ACC Championships, defeating No. 6 seeded Notre Dame 4-1 in Friday evening's quarterfinal showdown at Cary Tennis Park.
After a strong regular season that saw them consistently ranked in the ITA top-25, the Wolfpack entered postseason play with momentum and a double bye, setting the stage for a confident start to championship season.
NC State wasted no time asserting dominance in doubles play. The tandem of Jasmine Conway and Anna Zyryanova delivered an impressive 6-1 victory over Notre Dame's Rylie Hanford and Nibedita Ghosh, marking their seventh win as a pair. On court one, the No. 8 ranked duo of Maddy Zampardo and Gabriella Broadfoot followed suit with a composed 6-4 win, securing the doubles point for the Wolfpack.
It was déjà vu for the Fighting Irish, as NC State once again captured the doubles point just as they did in the previous meeting between the programs, setting the tone heading into singles.
In singles play, the Pack took early control, claiming first sets on courts two, five, and six. Trusty freshman No. 118 Mia Slama struck first for NC State, dominating from the No. 5 spot with a decisive 6-3, 6-2 win over Rylie Hanford to extend the lead to 2-0.
Notre Dame made their first moves on court one as No. 65 Akari Matsuno snuck past No. 45 Anna Zyryanova in a pair of tight sets, 6-4, 6-4, putting the Irish on the board. NC State answered quickly. Sophomore Maddy Zampardo showed consistency, earning a straight-set win (6-4, 6-4) to push the Wolfpack one away from victory.
On court two, sophomore Gabriella Broadfoot battled back after dropping 7-6(7-3) in the first-set, bouncing back with a 6-2 second set against Ghosh. With the match still in progress, attention shifted to court six. Freshman Gabia Paskauskas who recently broke back into the ITA singles rankings took the opportunity to play in the quarterfinals. After cruising to a 6-2 first set over Maria Olivia Castedo, Paskauskas closed it out with a determined 6-4 second set, clinching the match for the Pack and sending them into the semifinals.
Up Next: No. 3 NC State vs. No. 2Â North CarolinaÂ
The Wolfpack will return to Cary Tennis Park Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m. to take on a familiar opponent, the No. 2 seeded North Carolina Tar Heels.
These cross-town rivals last faced off in early March in Chapel Hill, where the Pack fell 4-3. Just two seasons ago, the Wolfpack claimed their first-ever ACC Championship title against UNC in a historic final.
The Tar Heels feature a strong lineup, particularly in doubles with top pairings: No. 9 Alanis Hamilton & Reese Brantmeier, No. 13 Susanna Maltby & Carson Tanguling, and No. 73 Tatum Evans & Theadora Rabman. In singles, UNC features a stacked roster led by No. 5 Reese Brantmeier, No. 21 Theadora Rabman, No. 44 Carson Tanguling, and No. 50 Tatum Evans.
