CARY, NC - After a hard-fought battle in the ACC Tournament Semifinals at Cary Tennis Park, the No. 3 seed NC State Wolfpack will return to Raleigh following a 4-1 defeat to the No. 2 seed North Carolina Tar Heels Saturday morning.
NC State opened their tournament run with a 4-1 victory over Notre Dame on Friday evening in the quarterfinals, setting the stage for a high-stakes showdown with their in-state rivals less than 24 hours later.
The Tar Heels struck first in doubles play. On court one, the No. 9 ranked duo of Reese Brantmeier and Alanis Hamilton finished first with a 6-1 win over No. 8 pairing Maddy Zampardo and Gabriella Broadfoot.
NC State responded quickly on court three, where Mia Slama and Kristina Paskauskas showcased their chemistry with a commanding 6-2 win over No. 73 Tatum Evans and Theadora Rabman. The doubles point came down to court two, where Anna Zyryanova and Jasmine Conway battled hard but ultimately fell 6-4 to UNC's No. 13 duo of Carson Tanguling and Susanna Maltby, giving the Heels the early 1-0 lead.
Junior Anna Zyryanova, the only ACC Champion on NC State's roster, faced the nation's No. 5 ranked player, Reese Brantmeier, at the top singles spot. Zyryanova showed resilience, battling back from a 5-3 deficit to level the opening set at 5-5. However, Brantmeier held firm, taking the first set 7-5 before finding her rhythm in the second and closing it out 6-2. On court six, the Tar Heels added to their lead as Claire Hill secured a straight-sets victory over Gabia Paskauskas, 7-5, 6-1.
NC State's first point of the morning came courtesy of Maddy Zampardo, who delivered a clutch performance on court two. Zampardo outlasted No. 50 Tatum Evans in a first-set tiebreak, 7-6(8-6) after being down in the beginning of the set. Zampardo closed it out with a confident 6-2 second set to bring the score to 3-1
With courts three, four, and five still in play and all pushing into deciding sets, the Wolfpack kept the pressure on. However, the Tar Heels secured the clincher on court five, as No. 118 Mia Slama fell 3-6, 6-1, 6-4.
No. 12-ranked Wolfpack look ahead to NCAA Tournament play, where they are projected to host both the first and second rounds. It's postseason journey continues with the NCAA Selection Show set for Monday, April 28 at 5:30 p.m.
