RALEIGH, N.C. – Sophomore pitcher Carly Maxton led the Wolfpack with a career high 12 strikeouts in game two of the doubleheader against Longwood to help push the Pack back into the win column Tuesday evening.
The Lancers took the first game, 1-0, after a solo homer from Maryanna Guy in the top of the seventh ended the Pack's opportunity for the shutout.
Game two saw Maxton strikeout the first six batters swinging, marking the most consecutive batters she struck out in her career.
The Wolfpack offense saw a repeat scenario in the bottom of the first and second. With two outs on the board, sophomore Tori Ensley smashed a three-run homer to left field to put NC State on the board, 3-0. In the bottom of the second, freshman Kendall Simmers did the same as she hit a three-run homer to left center with two outs on the board to push the Pack ahead, 6-0.
Maxton struck out the first Lancer batter faced in the top of the fifth to mark her eighth K of the evening and 100th of her career. She joins Rylee Wyman as the only other pitcher on the staff to tally 100 career strikeouts.
The bottom of the fifth saw freshman Taryn Massey, who earned her fourth consecutive start at third base, record the first home run of her collegiate career. The solo shot pushed NC State ahead, 7-0.
After six shutout, no hit innings, the Lancers found a gap on the right side to record its lone hit of the evening with one out. But Maxton continued to dominate in the circle and ended the game with her 12th strikeout of the evening, 11 of which went down as swinging. The shutout marked her sixth of the season, which ties for third most by a D1 pitcher in the NCAA this season.
The Wolfpack moves to 22-22 on the season.
