RALEIGH, NC – NC State Baseball made it six straight wins Friday afternoon as the Wolfpack was able to hold off Wright State 6-4 behind a strong start from Dominic Fritton at the Doak.
Fritton (2-1) earned the win after 6.2 innings of work, allowing just one earned run on five hits and one walk. Fritton finished the game with 10 strikeouts for his second consecutive game with double-digit punchouts. Fritton lowered his ERA to 1.25 on the season in 21.2 innings pitched.
The Wolfpack (9-5) offense was led by Josh Hogue, whose bat stays hot. Hogue finished with three hits and two RBIs. Over the last five games, Hogue has eight hits and nine RBIs. Ty Head continued to get on base as his 16th walk of the season extended his on-base streak to 14 while adding a double and scoring a run. Chris McHugh, who leads NC State in average, hits, and RBIs, added to it with a run scored and an RBI on the day.
Wright State (4-7) trailed the entire game but looked to even the score in the seventh as back-to-back home runs made it a 6-4 game. Jacob Dudan (1), who made his first career start on Tuesday, came on in relief in the eighth inning, retired the side in order, and came on for the save in the ninth.
After a lead-off double to begin the ninth, Dudan struck out the side to end the game and secure the ninth win of the season for NC State. Dudan allowed just one hit in two innings pitched while striking out four. Dudan now has seven strikeouts in four consecutive shutout frames.
Mychal Grogan (0-1), who pitched three innings but allowed four runs on five hits, walked two, and struck out two, got the loss for the Raiders.
Wolfpack pitching held the Raiders to 0-7 with runners in scoring position, but the Wolfpack offense was just 2-9 in its opportunities, allowing Wright State to keep the score close. NC State struck out just two times all afternoon.
The scoring was started in the bottom of the third as Hogue ripped a double down the right field line, bringing in McHugh and Ryder Woodson. Woodson made his first collegiate start at shortstop and had a hit and an RBI in the fourth to extend the Pack lead.
A bases-loaded walk from Alex Sosa capped off a three-run inning, extending the lead to 5-1, but a throwing error from Sosa in the top of the sixth gave Wright State the run back, making it 5-2.
With two outs in the top of the sixth and after Fritton's 103rd pitch, his day was done. Andrew Shaffner came on in relief to get the final out, but the Raiders were ready. Shaffner's first pitch of the day left the ballpark as Luke Arnold hit a home run to the visiting bullpen. Conlan Daniel followed Arnold and hit a home run to left center to make it a 6-4 game. With two outs, an error and a single put runners on at the corners for Wright State. Shaffner was able to get out of the jam with a strikeout, and Wright State would not be able to mount a comeback.
