
NC State Captures Battle at Briars Creek

JOHN'S ISLAND, S.C. – The NC State men's golf team started the spring portion of its schedule off in winning fashion as the Pack took team medalist honors at the 14-team Battle at Briars Creek held at the Golf Club at Briars Creek.
NC State opened and closed the tournament with team scores of eight-under par and finished the tournament with a three-round score of 19-under par for a six stroke win over second place.
Michael Vick led the Pack's effort as he finished in a three-way tie for individual medalist honors.
The tournament title is the second in four tournaments for the 2024-25 men's golf team.
This marks the 14th tournament title for NC State head coach Press McPhaul in his eighth season with the Pack. NC State has won at least one tournament title in seven of the eight seasons McPhaul has been head coach.
Vick posted a three-round score of seven-under 209 to tie for first place. Vick's first round effort of five-under par 67 was the best 18-hole score of Vick's NC State career and his 54-hole score of 209 was his best 54-hole score of his Pack career.
Vick closed the tournament with a three-round scorecard of 67-73-69 to finish tied with Elon's Garrett Risner and Clemson's Kian Rose.
Nick Mathews was next for the Pack, two shots back of Vick in a tie for sixth place. After an opening round of even-par 72, Mathews shot a three-under 69 and a two-under 70 in the final two rounds of the tournament to finish with a three-round score of five-under par.
Freshman Xander Goboy finished in a tie for 10th place at four-under par. Goboy went under par in all three rounds as he carded a 71-70-71 in the tournament.
The Battle at Briars Creek was the third tournament of Goboy's collegiate career and is the second top-10 finish in his time with the Pack.
Joey Lenane was next for the Pack, one shot back of Goboy in a tie for 14th place. Lenane posted rounds of two-under par 70s between a 73 in the second round to finish three-under par for the tournament.
Lenane has now finished under par in all four tournaments of the 2024-25 season and has finished in the top-20 of all four of his tournaments.
Adam Pedersen rounded out the NC State lineup in 66th place.
The Pack claimed medalist honors with a six-shot win over tournament-host College of Charleston. West Virginia finished in third, two shots back of the Cougars. ACC foes Clemson and Wake Forest finished in a tie for fourth place, nine shots back of NC State.
NC State is back in action Monday, Feb. 17 when it begins play at the Watersound Invitational held at Shark's Tooth Golf Club in Panama City Beach, Fla.
