RALEIGH – In its first conference matchup of the season, 10th-ranked NC State (9-4, 1-0) protected its home court while taking down 22nd-ranked California (7-1, 0-1) by a 4-2 score and handing them their first loss of the season.
In front of a packed house, the Wolfpack got its first taste of the Friday night lights outdoors, fueling its way to an exciting victory.
Doubles action featured a top-25 matchup on court two with 22nd-ranked Jules Leroux and Luca Staeheli taking on 25th-ranked Theo Dean and Carl Emil Overbeck. While Martin Borisiouk and William Manning on court three for doubles were able to jump out to a 5-1 lead over their opponents, courts one and two were both trailing on the scoreboard 2-4 and 3-4, respectively.
17th-ranked Braden Shick and Fons Van Sambeek on court one and Leroux and Staeheli on court two were both able to bring their scores to 4-4 while court three had a 5-2 lead just inching to their victory. A 6-2 win on court three propelled the energy on courts one and two for the Pack. Shick and Van Sambeek were able to clinch the doubles point with a 7-5 win while Leroux and Staeheli were fighting through a tiebreaker on court two.
With the crucial 1-0 edge moving into singles, the crowd of over 200 people continued to provide fire and energy for the Wolfpack to hold off the undefeated Golden Bears.
Staeheli cruised to his triumph first, upsetting No. 32 Theo Dean in straight sets by a 6-1, 6-3 score to push his team's lead to 2-0.
The scoreboard would continue to add points on either side back and forth as Borisiouk came up short on court two, Van Sambeek claimed a win on court four, immediately followed by Nikolay Nedelchev falling on court six to make the team score 3-2.
All eyes shifted to Leroux on court five and Shick on court one who was facing fifth-ranked Carl Emil Overbeck. Shick dropped the first set, claimed the second set and held a 3-0 lead in the third set while Leroux was looking to take his victory in straight sets over No. 83 Derrick Chen.
Ultimately, it was Leroux who was able to clinch the win for the Wolfpack 4-2.
