Raleigh, NC. – The No. 13 NC State baseball team secured the series sweep over Fordham Saturday from The Doak. The Wolfpack put up an impressive 19-run performance to get the victory and start 3-0 on the season.
The Pack used 15 hits and three six-run innings to propel NC State to their third run-rule victory of the season. Every starter had at least one hit and was led by Alex Sosa, who scored three times and had a two-hit game that included his second home run of the season.
In his first start with the Wolfpack, third baseman Ryan Jaros had a two-hit game, scoring twice and driving in one. Chris McHugh continues his hot start at the plate, adding three more RBIs to his account and scoring two runs.
The Wolfpack went yard three times, Brayden Fraasman opened his Wolfpack account, and Jake Bechtel came on as a pinch hitter, opening his season with a three-run home run to break the game wide open. It was the second straight year Bechtel had gone deep in his first at-bat of the season. It was the first pinch-hit home run in two years for NC State.
Wolfpack starting pitcher Ryan Marohn (1-0) got the win, who went five scoreless innings, giving up only three hits and striking out seven, one off his career high in a dominating performance.
Junior reliever Matt Willadsen returned after missing all last year with an injury and had a strong showing. Willadsen went one inning finishing with three strikeouts. Walladsen's first outing in 623 days saw him throw 17 pitches, with 12 of them being strikes despite a first-pitch home run.
NC State (3-0, 0-0 ACC) started with a bang in the third inning, scoring six runs on five hits, including the first home run from Fraasman in a Wolfpack uniform. Jaros got his first hit as a member of the Pack with a base-clearing double to put the Pack up 6-0.
Fordham (0-3, 0-0 A10) came alive in the sixth inning, scoring their first run of the day with a home run from Anthony Grubau.
In the fifth, Justin DeCriscio hammered an RBI double to left, capped off by Bechtel's pinch-hit home run, putting the Pack up 13-0.
Two of the six-run innings were back-to-back, with the sixth inning solidifying the Wolfpack's lead, which was headlined by a Ryder Woodson RBI double and Sosa hitting his second homer of the season.
Fordham cut into the deficit, coming back at the Pack with a five-run seventh inning, including two home runs before the Pack ended the game 19-6.
Camden Wimbish, Jacob Dudan, and Carson Kelly appeared from the bullpen to close out the game.
