RALEIGH, N.C. – Tre Holloman scored a career-high 25 points and Darrion Williams added 28 points as 25th-ranked NC State pushed back multiple VCU comeback attempts Monday night to win, 85-79.
Holloman scored 25 points on 6-of-12 shooting and was a perfect 10-of-10 at the foul line as he eclipsed his previous career-high of 20 points in the win. The Minneapolis, Minn., native scored 16 of his 25 points in the second half and made all six of his free throw attempts in the final 18 seconds to preserve the NC State win.
Williams led NC State with 28 points and now has scored 60 points in the last two games after scoring a career-high 32 in last week's win over UNCG. The 60 points in the last two games is the most in back-to-back games of Williams collegiate career.
The Sacramento, Calif., native shot 9-of-15 from the field and was 8-of-9 at the foul line.
Ven-Allen Lubin chipped in 11 points and tied for team-high honors with nine rebounds while Matt Able also reached double figures with 12 points.
Paul McNeil, Jr., who entered the game averaging 20.3 points per game was held scoreless but did grab a career-high nine rebounds and tied his career-high with three assists.
VCU only led once and it was for just six seconds at 1-0 to start the game, but the Rams never went away as NC State never led by more than six points in the final 12 minutes of the game.
The Rams tied the game at 65 on a lay-up with 9:20 to play, but missed the ensuing and-one free throw. NC State rattled off the next six points of the game to push its advantage back out to six and VCU was never able to get the game even again.
VCU did get the game within two points twice in the final two minutes though, but each time NC State responded with free throws to keep the Rams behind.
NC State is back in action Monday afternoon when it faces Seton Hall in the Maui Invitational. Tipoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. ET and the game will be televised on ESPN2.
