DURHAM, N.C. – The NC State men's basketball team gave second-ranked Duke all it could handle, but the Blue Devils made enough plays in the second half to get past the Pack, 74-64, Monday night inside Cameron Indoor Stadium.
NC State was led by Dontrez Styles who scored a team-best 18 points while Trey Parker scored a career-high 15 points off-the-bench.
Styles tied his career-high with four three-pointers but fouled out in the second half as he had the primary defensive assignment on Duke freshman superstar Cooper Flagg.
Parker made his first six shots from the field on his way to his season-best output.
Brandon Huntley-Hatfield added 10 points for the Pack.
After Duke scored the first basket of the game, Styles made a three-pointer on the other end to give the Pack its first lead of the game and NC State would not trail again in the opening 20 minutes.
With the score 10-9, NC State went on a 13-2 run to take a 23-11 on a Jayden Taylor three-pointer with 10:34 to play. An 8-0 run for Duke got the Blue Devils within four, 23-19, but the Pack had another answer, going on a 12-3 run to take a 35-22 lead with 4:14 to play. Duke closed the half with a run of its own, scoring the final seven points of the period to get within four, 37-33 at the break.
NC State finished the opening 20 minutes shooting 48.4 percent from the field, including 7-of-12 from three-point range as the Pack assisted on 10 of their 15 first half field goals.
Duke's 7-0 run to end the half extended in the second half as the Blue Devils scored the first 12 points of the final frame to take its first lead since it was 2-0.
After Duke opened up a 45-37 lead, NC State was able to get back within one, 51-50, with 9:35 to play and again got within one, 63-62, with 4:40 to go, but could never catch back up with the Blue Devils.
A Huntley-Hatfield lay-up with 1:56 to play brought NC State within four, 68-64, but the Pack would not score again and Duke would score the final six points of the ball game to end the game with its largest night of the evening.
Flagg led Duke with 28 points and seven rebounds while Kon Knueppel added 19 points. Sion James chipped in 14 for the Blue Devils.
Duke finished the game with a 25-10 advantage in fast break points and also won the turnover battle as they forced NC State into 13 turnovers while turning it over only 10 times themselves.
The Blue Devils finished the game 24-of-28 from the foul line while NC State was just 6-of-7 from the charity stripe.
NC State is back in action Saturday afternoon when it hosts Clemson inside the Lenovo Center. Tipoff against the Tigers is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. and the game will be televised on The CW.
