SERIES HISTORY VS. RUTGERS
NC State and Rutgers will face off for the seventh time on Sunday afternoon. A few notes tracking the Pack's road matchup against the Scarlet Knights are listed below:
• NC State and Rutgers will square off in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 1987-88 on Sunday. This past season's matchup on Aug. 24, 2023, ended in a 1-1 draw when Annika Wohner knotted the score in the 88th minute. Rutgers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead before Wohner's late tally evened the score.
• NC State won the first three matchups in the series to hold a 3-2 advantage in the all-time series. The Wolfpack shut out the Scarlet Knights in each of the first three matchups, posting a 1-0 victory on Oct. 11, 1987, a 4-0 win on Oct. 9, 1988, and a 1-0 victory on Sept. 8, 1991.
• NC State is 2-2-0 against Rutgers in matches played outside of Raleigh. The Scarlet Knights won their only home match against the Wolfpack in Piscataway 3-1 on Sept. 20, 1997.
SCOUTING THE SCARLET KNIGHTS
Rutgers (3-1-1) has posted back-to-back 3-0 victories following its first loss of the season on Aug. 25 at UMass. The Scarlet Knights faced fellow ACC foe Wake Forest for its second game of the season on Aug. 18, recording a 1-1 draw at home. All three of Rutgers' victories have come in shutout fashion, posting a 1-0 win over NJIT, 3-0 win over Lehigh and a 3-0 win over Maine. Senior Riley Tiernan leads the Scarlet Knights in goals (two), assists (three) and points (seven), while goalkeeper Olivia Bodmer has played all 450 minutes in goal with three shutouts and a .846 save percentage. Rutgers was predicted seventh out of 18 teams in the 2024 Big Ten Women's Soccer Preseason Poll after going 9-7-4 with an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2023.
BRINGING GWU TO RALEIGH
NC State added a home match against George Washington on Sunday, Sept. 15. The Pack added the nonconference matchup as a replacement match for a canceled game against Colorado on Sept. 1.
GOALS GALORE
After a slow start in its first three matches, the NC State offense has erupted for eight goals between back-to-back victories over VCU and Charlotte. The Wolfpack scored just once in an 0-2-1 start to the season before logging three first-half goals in its past two victories. The last time NC State scored three or more goals in back-to-back matches was on Oct. 24 and Oct. 27, 2019, when the Wolfpack notched a 3-2 win over Syracuse and a 3-0 win over Notre Dame.
BRACE FOR IMPACT
Two games. Two braces. Four goals. Annika Wohner has sparked NC State's offensive explosion over its past two victories, recording a pair of braces in multi-goal wins over VCU and Charlotte. Wohner recorded her first-career brace in the Pack's 5-0 win over VCU on Aug. 25, capping off the first half with her first goal of the season before scoring NC State's fifth and final goal of the shutout win over the Rams. Wohner then matched her goal tally from the entire 2023 season during the Charlotte match, scoring twice in the first 25 minutes during the Wolfpack's 3-1 win. Wohner not only became the first Wolfpack player with a multi-goal effort since Lulu Guttenberger scored twice against Miami on Oct. 15, 2022, but she also recorded five or more points in a match for the first time since Guttenberger recorded two goals and an assist in a 5-0 win at Oklahoma on Sept. 9, 2021. Wohner assisted Jaiden Thomas' goal in the win over Charlotte.
TALLY THEM UP
Since Tim Santoro's first season at NC State in 2013, the Wolfpack is now 68-4-5 in matches when it scores multiple goals (two or more) following back-to-back multi-goal victories against VCU and Charlotte.
