CHARLOTTE, NC. – NC State swim and dive continued to be recognized for their success this year in the pool, as head coach Braden Holloway was named ACC Men's Swimming Coach of the Year, and Daniel Diehl was honored with ACC Men's Freshman of the Year, the league announced on Monday.
This will be Holloway's 10th coach of the year honor and the third consecutive year he has won the award after leading the Wolfpack men to their third straight ACC title and a fifth-place finish at the NCAA championships. Holloway won his first Coach of the Year award in 2013 and took home the award every year between 2015 and 2020.
Holloway now sits second in the ACC all-time for most awards won, only sitting behind Wolfpack assistant coach Mark Bernardino, who won 17 at the University of Virginia.
On their way to the 33rd ACC Championship team title in program history, Holloway saw the men's team put up 1499.5 points, which included eight first-place finishes. In Indianapolis at the NCAA Championships, the men broke two American records, set numerous program records, and personal bests on their way to 10 All-American recipients and 10 Honorable Mention All-Americans. With a fifth-place finish, it was the ninth consecutive year Holloway led the men to a top-10 finish at NCAAs.
After joining the Wolfpack in January, Diehl made an immediate impact in the pool. The Cumberland, MD, native took home four top-five finishes at the ACC championships, which included three medals. He led off the 800 freestyle relay that took home second place, earned silver in the 200 backstroke, finished third in the 200 freestyle and in the 200 IM placed fourth.
He followed his strong showing at ACCs with three top-16 finishes at NCAAs. Diehl was the anchor in the 800 freestyle relay team that won the B-final and took home ninth place. Appearing in the B-final in both the 200 IM and 200 backstroke, Diehl finished 15th overall in the backstroke and 16th overall in the 200 IM to take home honorable mention All-American honors.
In his short time in Raleigh, Diehl has already placed among the top 10 in program history in three events. He ranks ninth in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:32.72 and fourth in the 200 backstroke at 1:39.01. His time of 1:41.84 in the 200 IM is the fourth fastest in program history.
Diehl becomes the sixth men's swimmer at NC State to win the Freshman of the Year award, joining Aiden Hayes (2022), Nyls Korstanje (2019), Coleman Stewart (2017), Justin Ress (2016), and Anton Ipsen (2015).
