
NC State Falls Short In Tight Match To No. 8 Virginia

Charlottesville, VA- No. 22 NC State men's tennis faced its first ACC defeat to No. 8 Virginia Sunday, Mar. 3.
After a little rain pushed the match back to a 2:30PM start time, the two programs were underway. The Pack headed into Sunday's match coming off of a strong 7-0 sweep to No. 59 Virginia Tech Friday Mar. 1 to begin the Wolfpack's conference slate.
On court one the Hoo's came out aggressive, getting a quick 5-1 lead over No. 22 Martin Borisiouk and Joe Wayand in doubles play. Rounding out the match Borisiouk and Wayand fell short after a tough fight 6-4.
On court two Catry and Staeheli caught an early lead against the Virginia with a 2-0 start to doubles. Hopper and Graziani(VA) picked up the next 2 games to give the Pack a tight 3-2 match. Catry and Staeheli' match was abandoned at 5-5 with courts one and five reaching the finish line prior.
On court three Damien Salvestre and Braden Shick paired up in the doubles lineup. Salvestre, filling in for Junior Fons Van Sambeek has been very versatile in the Wolfpack lineup recently, always coming out strong when his name gets called. The pair carried the lead in a tight match through doubles. The Hoo's eventually made way, taking the match 6-3 and securing the doubles point for Virginia.
Braden Shick came out strong in the first set 6-2 against opponent Dylan Dietrich. Shick fell in the second set 6-4, bringing the game to three sets. Shick battled it out in the third set to give the Pack its first point on the board in singles.
Fons Van Sambeek came out hot in singles with a fresh set of legs taking an early lead over opponent No. 45 Jeffery Von Der Schulenburg 6-1 in the first set. Maintaining momentum Sambeek extended his lead 4-2 in the second set. Schulenburg found his rhythm against Sambeek taking the second set 7-5. Sambeek shortened the gap for the Pack taking the lead in the third set defeating Schulenburg 6-3 to put the second point on the board for the Pack.
Wayand picked up the pace in the second set after dropping his first, giving the Pack a glimpse of hope on court six bringing the score to a 4-2 second set. Wayand struggled to maintain the lead, dropping 6-4 in the second set allowing the Cavaliers their first singles point.
Robin Cartry broke away from No. 10 Chris Rodesch in the first set giving Catry a lead on court one 6-2. Courts three, five, and six dropped the first set over on the Cavelier's giving the Pack some catching up to do in the next two sets. After taking the second set Catry slipped away from Calvier opponent, dropping 6-1 in the third set.
On court five Damien Salvestre claimed the second set 7-5 over opponent Alexander Kiefer. Salvestre put up a fight, Straying away from Kiefer in the third set to fall 2-6. Left on court three was Luca Staeheli who claimed the win by opponent retirement at a 2-6, 6-4, 3-2 match.
