CHARLOTTESVILLE, NC – The No. 10 Wolfpack found themselves in the lead after winning the doubles point early on but were unable to come away with the victory as the No. 6 Cavilers took five courts in singles play to go on and win 5-2 Thursday night from the Virginia Tennis Center.
For the Wolfpack (15-6, 5-3), the lone singles win came from freshman Maddy Zampardo. The Detroit native was victorious in three sets on court five with a ranked win over No. 76 Elaine Chervinsky, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (9-7). It was Zampardo's first ranked win in five tries.
In doubles play, it was a battle of ranked pairings on courts one and two, with NC State and Virginia splitting. After No. 14 Melodie Collardand Elaine Chervinsky defeated No. 13 Amelia Rajecki and Zampardo 6-0, the Wolfpack found themselves down. Gina Dittmann and Gabriella Broadfoot forced a third and final match to decide the point after winning on court three.
It came down to the No. 10 pairing in the country, Sophie Abrams and Anna Zyryanova. They fought hard for victory, pulling out a 7-6 (7-4) win to give the Wolfpack the doubles point.
No. 5 Rajecki forced a third set, looking to give the Wolfpack a chance to stay in the match. The third set went to a tiebreaker that No.25 Hibah Shaikh went on to win 8-6 to clinch the match.
The Wolfpack will stay in Virginia and try to end their two-game losing streak as they prepare to take on Virginia Tech on Saturday, March 30, at 1 p.m.
