
Pack Captures ACC Opener with OT Thriller over Florida State

NC State’s win snaps FSU’s NCAA Record 14 game win streak in OT games
RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State men's basketball team outscored Florida State 14-4 in overtime to beat the Seminoles, 84-74, in both teams ACC opener Saturday evening inside Lenovo Center.
Florida State had won an NCAA record 14 consecutive overtime games before the Pack snapped the streak with a dominating overtime performance.
Marcus Hill and Dontrez Styles scored 13 of NC State's 14 points in overtime.
Hill started overtime with a driving lay-up and after FSU tied the score, Styles took over draining a three-pointer and then stealing the ball and driving the length of the floor for a lay-up to push the Pack's lead to five.
After another defense stop, Hill made a jumper to give NC State a seven-point lead with 1:42 to play. Florida State scored on its next possession but the Pack made five of its last six free throws and the Seminoles would not score again.
Hill scored a season-high 23 points on 7-of-12 shooting and made 8-of-10 free throws while Styles scored a season-high 21 points – 19 after halftime – on 7-of-13 shooting and made all four of his free throw attempts.
Jayden Taylor added 14 points.
NC State led the entire first half and early in the second half until Florida State went on a 9-0 run, taking its first lead, 49-47, on a three-pointer with 12:39 to play.
After FSU extended its lead to 52-49, NC State went on a 7-0 run to take a 56-52 lead with 9:40 to go in regulation. The Seminoles responded with a 14-4 run, taking its largest lead of the at 66-60 with 3:44 to go.
The Pack though one more run though, go on a 10-2 run to take a 70-68 lead with 19 seconds to play. Florida State made two free throws with 12 seconds left to tie the game and send it to overtime.
Jamir Watkins led the Seminoles with 24 points. He made 16-of-17 from the foul line. Malique Ewin added 23 points and a game-high nine rebounds.
NC State only turned the ball over twice after halftime as the Pack finished the game with a 21-9 advantage in points off turnovers.
The Pack returns to action Tuesday when it plays its annual Heritage Game at Reynolds Coliseum against Coppin State. Tipoff against the Eagles is scheduled for 7 p.m. and the game can be streamed at ACC Network Extra.
