
Mathews Paces Pack in First Tourney of Season

Redshirt Junior Finished 54-hole tournament in a tie for second place
GRAND HAVEN, Mich. – The NC State men's golf team opened the 2023-24 season this week at the Folds of Honor Collegiate and redshirt junior Nick Mathews led the Pack with a second place finish.
The Pack finished in a tie for 10th place as a team at the 54-hole tournament that was held at the American Dunes Golf Club in Grand Haven, Mich.
Mathews fired a four-under 67 in the first round to take the 18-hole lead on the 90-player field. He followed up with a one-under par 70 to stay in first through two rounds. The Mebane, N.C. shot a 76 in the final round to finish in a tie for second place at even-par for the tournament.
The second place finish is the top finish for Mathews in his collegiate career.
Spencer Oxendine was next for the Pack in a tie for 37th place. The Fayetteville, N.C., got better every round, shooting a 76 on Monday, a 74 on Tuesday before an even-par 71 on Wednesday in the third and final round.
Ethan Choi and Joey Lenane finished in a tie for 58th place at 15-over par. Lenane posted a four-under par 67 in the second round to lead NC State on the second day.
Lenane and Mathews were the only players to shoot a four-under par 67 in the three-day tournament.
Freshman Adam Pedersen made his collegiate debut in the tournament. The freshman did not post a score on Monday in the first round but had rounds of 79 and 74 in the final two rounds to finish 11-over par.
NC State is back in action at the end of September when it travels to Durham to play in the Rod Myers Invitational at Duke Golf Club.
