Junior Will Buete's late penalty kick was the difference in the contest
RALEIGH, NC – Will Buete made sure NC State remained perfect at Dail Soccer Stadium.
Buete found the back of the net on a penalty kick with four minutes remaining in the game, lifting the Pack to a 1-0 win over North Florida.
NC State is now a perfect 5-0 at home, tying the best start to a home slate in the George Kiefer era. Including the three exhibitions, the Pack is 8-0 inside Dail Soccer Stadium.
NC State (5-3) kept the 1,298 fans in attendance on their heels, battling back and forth with the Ospreys (2-3-3) for 86 minutes. The Pack caught a break when Buete drew a foul, setting up a dramatic finish.
It was the third goal of the season for Buete, the junior co-captain from Wake Forest.
"I think we showed ourselves well," Buete said. "We'll continue to get chances."
The going was tough, with the Pack only getting five shots. On the defensive end, sophomore Lucas Hatsios returned to the net, finishing with two saves in 90 minutes of action.
Kiefer was forced to play a lot of his younger players due to injury - three freshmen started - but they held the line until Buete broke the seal.
"Some guys got to start tonight, you look at guys who came off the bench and played considerable minutes," Keifer said. "From that standpoint to still get a shutout was a positive."
It was the third shutout of the season for NC State and second in the last four games.
Kiefer thought his offense came out aggressive.
"I felt like we were a little unlucky in the first 15 minutes not to be up by one," Kiefer said. "I give the guys credit to figure out a way to take care of the game."
It was just the second meeting between the two teams with the Pack avenging a 3-2 loss in 2016.
Up next: NC State will travel to Louisville on Sunday for a 7 pm contest.
