Wolfpack Falls 2-1 at Buffs' Prentup Field
BOULDER, Colo. – NC State women's soccer dropped its first game of the 2023 season in a 2-1 setback at Colorado on Thursday night at Prentup Field.
After NC State's Taylor Chism tied the score at 1-1 in the 87th minute, the Buffaloes grabbed the late winner with less than a minute remaining when Shyra James elevated for her second goal of the night. All three goals scored in Thursday night's matchup came off corner kicks.
NC State (1-1-2) increased the pressure on Colorado (4-1-0) in the second half, outshooting the Buffaloes 12-10 in the final 45 minutes.
Just moments before Chism logged the tying goal, senior forward Jameese Joseph came within inches of tying the score when a last-second tackle pushed her shot inches wide of the right post. Chism then charged toward the goal line on Mackenzie Smith's ensuing delivery from the corner flag, finishing from close range for her first goal of the season.
Similar to the Pack's 1-1 draw against Rutgers, Smith recorded another assist late in the game off a cross from a corner kick. James, however, broke the 1-1 deadlock with her second score of the night.
Colorado struck first with a goal in the sixth minute when James finished a corner kick from Buffaloes' teammate Amaya Gonzalez. NC State goalkeeper Maria Echezarreta denied the Buffs of an opening goal two minutes earlier on a one-on-one opportunity, logging her first save of the night against Hope Leyba. Echezarreta finished with five saves.
Emika Kawagishi, who suffered a season-ending injury in 2022, made her first appearance since the Wolfpack's home exhibition against Ohio State this past season when she subbed on in the 35th minute of Thursday's match. Kawagishi quickly fired two shots in the opening half's final 10 minutes, firing one of her attempts on target. She finished her 2023 debut with 34 minutes off the bench.
