#Pack9 Welcomes Six Transfers, Announces 2023 Fall Roster

2023 FALL BASEBALL ROSTER
RALEIGH, N.C. – NC State baseball head coach Elliott Avent announced the addition of six transfers to the 2023 fall baseball roster on Wednesday afternoon. More information on the Wolfpack's six transfers is listed below.
No. 3 Brandon Butterworth | INF | Jr. | R/R | Western Carolina
Butterworth joins NC State after spending his first two collegiate seasons at Western Carolina. Butterworth, a Monroe, North Carolina native, played 86 total games as a Catamount with 71 starts. He batted .301 with 66 hits, 19 multi-hit games and eight-multi RBI efforts as Western Carolina's starting second baseman this past season. Butterworth's seven triples ranked first in the Southern Conference and tied WCU's single-season triples' record. He also made 32 appearances with 19 starts as a freshman, batting .296 with six extra-base hits, 13 runs scored and nine RBI.
No. 22 Josh Hogue | OF/INF | So. | L/R | Santa Fe College
The Pack welcomes Hogue to NC State after the sophomore spent his freshman season at Santa Fe College. Hogue served as Santa Fe's everyday left fielder in all 50 games, leading the team in hits (82), runs (65), batting average (.412), on-base percentage (.481) and slugging percentage (.608). Hogue earned All-FCSAA/NJCAA Region 8 First Team honors and All Mid-Florida Conference First Team accolades this past season.
No. 31 Shane Van Dam | RHP | So. | R/R | SUNY Cortland
Van Dam joins NC State after spending his freshman season at SUNY Cortland. The Cranford, New Jersey native made 15 relief appearances and three starts in 2023, sporting a 2-1 record with a 3.07 ERA. Van Dam struck out 43 batters and allowed just 13 walks over 29.1 innings pitched, limiting opposing batters to a .162 batting average and only six extra-base hits. He tied for a team-high three saves and tossed a career-high 11 strikeouts over a career-high five scoreless innings to earn a win at Plattsburgh (April 28).
No. 33 Garrett Pennington | INF | Gr. | R/R | Wichita State/Central Missouri
Pennington joins NC State after spending his 2023 season at Wichita State. The Lenexa, Kansas native slashed .307/.372/.560 as the Shockers' everyday first baseman. The graduate student finished his sole season in Wichita with 15 homers, 12 doubles, 55 RBI and 47 runs scored. Pennington was twice named to the American Athletic Conference Weekly Honor Roll in 2023. Before arriving at Wichita State, Pennington exceled at Central Missouri and was named D2CCA All-America, ABCA All-Region, NCBWA All-Central Region and First Team All-MIAA in 2022. Pennington hit .397 with 23 doubles, two triples, 11 homers and 50 RBI in 49 games in his final season at Central Missouri, helping lead the Mules to a 46-9 record and MIAA regular season and tournament titles. In 2021, he hit .354 and helped his team reach the national championship game.
No. 45 Hollis Fanning | RHP | Sr. | R/R | Tennessee
The Pack welcomes Fanning to NC State after the senior spent his first three seasons at Tennessee. Fanning made 24 total appearances with one start for the Volunteers, sporting a 2.21 ERA with 29 strikeouts and just four walks over 20.1 innings pitched. The Lynchburg, Tennessee native made 15 appearances this past season, finishing 2023 with a 1.26 ERA and 24 strikeouts over 14.1 innings pitched. Fanning pitched 0.2 scoreless innings in a victory over Charlotte in the NCAA Clemson Regional this past season. He also logged a career-high three innings with seven consecutive strikeouts against Belmont in the Vols' regular season home finale. Fanning made his first-career start and pitched two scoreless innings against Alabama A&M on Feb. 21, allowing one hit while striking out two batters.
No. 99 Alec Makarewicz | INF | Gr. | L/R | East Carolina
Makarewicz joins NC State after spending his first four seasons at East Carolina. Over his four years in Greenville, Makarewicz appeared in 203 total games with 183 starts, batting .272 with 28 homers, 128 RBI, 36 doubles, five triples and 127 runs scored. The graduate student started all 133 games over his final two seasons at ECU. In 2023, he was the only East Carolina player to start every game, registering 11 homers, 11 doubles, three triples, 49 RBI, 44 runs scored and 109 total bases. In 2022, he batted .270 with 52 runs scored, 11 homers, 45 RBI and 28 walks, finishing the season with 19 multi-hit games and 13 multi-RBI efforts. Makarewicz started 50 of ECU's 58 games in 2021 as a second-year freshman, batting .295 with six homers, nine doubles, 33 RBI and 30 runs scored. Defensively, Makarewicz logged 182 total putouts and 230 assists over four seasons of infield and outfield work for the Pirates.
