Former NC State champion, Michael Macchiavello, wins US Open

Macchiavello advances to Final X for spot on US Olympic team
LAS VEGAS Former NC State wrestler Michael Macchiavello defeated Kollin Moore in the finals of the US Open Senior Freestyle Championships Friday night in Las Vegas.

Macchiavello, an NCAA champion in 2018, won 12-2 in the 92 kg division.
Â
With the win Macchiavello earned a spot in Final X on May 10 in Newark, New Jersey. Final X determines the US Senior World/Olympic Team member for each weight class.Â
Â
Representing the Wolfpack Wrestling Club, Macchiavello used a strong second period to pull away from Moore.
Â
In the 97 kg finals current Pack wrestler Isaac Trumble, also representing Wolfpack Wrestling Club, fell to J'den Cox, 12-3.

Nick Gwiazdowski, a two-time NCAA champion for NC State, lost to Gable Stevenson, 10-0, in the 125 kg finals. Gwiazdowski wrestled for Spartan Combat RTC.

Macchiavello, Trumble and Gwiazdowski weren't the only Wolfpack representatives who found success in Las Vegas.

Jakob Camacho, making his return to the mat after missing last season, placed third in the 57 kg class. Hayden Hidlay, a five-time All-American for NC State, placed fifth in the 70 kg class. Hidlay is currently the Student-Athlete Development Coordinator for the Wolfpack.

Thomas Gantt placed seventh in 74 kg, while Hayden Hidlay finished fourth in the 86 kg class. Dylan Fishback finished sixth in the same class.

Saturday will be the first round of the U20 freestyle competition. Troy Hohman (57 kg), Koy Buesgens (65 kg), Jackson Arrington (70 kg) and Chase Horn (125 kg) will represent NC State for the Wolfpack Wrestling Club. Buesgens is an incoming freshman.Â
