RALEIGH The NC State wrestling team got one for the thumb, winning a fifth straight ACC championship.
Â
The Wolfpack finished with 101.5 team points, 23.5 points ahead of Virginia Tech, who finished in second place.
Â
NC State had eight wrestlers in the finals, with four bringing home ACC titles.
Â
Trent Hidlay was the only repeat champion, winning his third consecutive ACC title. Hidlay defeated Gavin Kane from UNC, 7-2, in the championship round.
Â
The Pack crowned three first-time winners. Jarrett Trombley (125), Kai Orine (133) and Owen Trephan (285) captured titles on Sunday.
Â
Orine was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament. Orine won his first championship in dramatic fashion, earning a last second pin over Pitt's Mickey Phillipi in overtime. Phillipi was the No. 1 seed in the 133 class.
Trombley also won his title in overtime, with a late takedown of Eddie Ventresca for the 3-1 win.Â
Â
With the second place finishes in the finals, plus Ed Scott's third place finish in the 157-pound class, NC State will take at least nine wrestlers to the NCAA Nationals in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Freshman Matty Singleton, who finished fourth in the 165 pound class, will wait for an at-large bid.
Â
Ryan Jack (141), Jackson Arrington (149), Alex Faison (174) and Isaac Trumble (197) all finished second.Â
Â
It was the second straight season Jack fell to Pitt's Cole Matthews in the finals (2-1).
Â
Faison, who came on late his senior season, took No. 1 seed Mekhi Lewis to two overtimes, falling 2-1. For the second time this season Trumble pushed Nino Bonaccorsi, the No. 1 wrestler in the nation in the 197 class, to the limit.
Â
Bonaccorsi escaped with a narrow 2-1 win over Trumble.Â
Â
It was only the second time a school has won five straight ACC championships. The ACC Wrestling Championship set an event attendance record with a sellout crowd of 3,834 fans.
