BLACKSBURG, Va. – Despite holding the lead for four innings, the Pack fell to No. 14 Virginia Tech, 7-3, Saturday afternoon at Tech Softball Park in game two of the ACC series.
The Woflpack had four batters step up to the plate in the top of the first. Graduate Katlyn Pavlick was walked by Hokies pitcher Lyndsey Grein and MaKayla Marbury grounded out to third base to end the top half of the inning.
Freshman Rylee Wyman started in the circle for the Pack and struck out two. The Hokies got one runner into scoring position, but were unable to get on the board as the Pack grabbed the final out to end the first inning on a fly out to center field.
Both teams remained scoreless through the second inning. Freshman Ellie Goins was the first batter up for the Pack and was hit by the fourth pitch thrown her way, earning her an automatic walk. Fellow freshman Nadia Sykes singled to left field on a 1-1 count, allowing Goins to make her way to third and get the Pack in scoring position. Outfielder Rebecca Murray drilled a ball over the outfield wall with an 0-1 count to record three RBI's and put the Wolfpack up. Her homer was her third this season and 13th of her career. Murray currently holds a six-game hit streak. Her career high is nine games straight with at least one hit, which she recorded during the 2021 season while at Elon.
The Wolfpack ended the top half of the third with a 3-0 lead on two hits.
The Hokies managed to get on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning. Addy Greene hit a homer to right center field, recording two RBI's to minimize the Pack's lead to one.
To start the bottom half of the fifth, NC State brought redshirt-junior Aisha Weixlmann into the circle. The Hokies took advantage of the pitching change and Emma Ritter hit a homer to tie the game three all. The Wolfpack got the next three Hokies at the plate out to end the fifth.
Virginia Tech took the lead for the first time in the bottom of the sixth after Greene homered to right field and brought in two RBI's to make it 5-3. Kylie Aldridge then hit a homer to bring in two RBI's and increase the Hokies lead.
The Wolfpack attempted to minimize Virginia Tech's lead, but Emma Lemly struckout the first two batters faced in the top of the seventh. Brooklyn Lucero entered the box as a pinch hitter and lined out to Lumley, ending game two.
