Hidlay, Scott, Orine represent NC State on final day
TULSA, OK Trent Hidlay, Kai Orine and Ed Scott ended their season with top 10 finishes at the NCAA Wrestling championships on Saturday.
Â
Hidlay finished fourth in the 184-pound class, the third top-five finish of his career. The four-time All-American dropped a close one to Kaleb Romero in the third place match.
Â
Scott ended his sophomore year with a fifth place finish, leaving Tulsa with a record of 6-2, winning four in a row at one point. The sophomore from DuBois, Pa. finishes the year with an overall record of 23-9.
Â
"It's definitely a stepping stone for where I want to go," Scott said about leaving Tulsa with a fifth place finish. "I want to keep moving forward and reach the top of the podium. I hit a little check point on my journey, but I'm not done yet."
Â
Orine placed eighth in the 133-pound class, going 3-3 overall. Orine was responsible for 8.5 team points over the course of three days.
Â
Orine went 1-2 on Saturday, ending his day with a 3-1 loss to Sam Latona of Virginia Tech in the rubber match between the two. Orine held a 1-0 lead going into the final period, but a late reversal by Latona was the difference.
Â
The redshirt sophomore from Imperial, Missouri, started out his second trip to the NCAA championships with two straight wins. Orine hopes to build momentum with each passing season, learning from his mistakes.
Â
"The good news is I have a couple of more years left in me (at NC State)," Orine said. "There's only steps to take up the podium and I'm excited to do that."
Â
Hidlay went 4-2 in Tulsa and ended his redshirt junior season with an overall record of 24-3. In his first match on Saturday, Hidlay defeated Marcus Coleman of Iowa State, 5-2. Coleman jumped out to a 2-0 advantage before Hidlay got on the board with an escape. A Hidlay takedown and escape in the third proved to be the difference.
Â
In the final match of the day, Hidlay and Romero went into sudden victory tied at one. Late in the overtime period, Romero scored a takedown that was reviewed by the officials. The call stood, awarding the victory to the Ohio State grappler.Â
"Obviously, when you don't finish out with a win there's a lot you have to go through," Hidlay said. "It was a good season, obviously I didn't acheive my goal, but I know I can take a lot from this and move forward with it and keep getting better."
Â
Hidlay was responsible for 15.0 of NC State's 48.0 points. As a team, the Pack finished 10th overall with a team score of 48.0. It was the ninth consecutive top-20 finish at the NCAA championships.Â
