GREENSBORO, N.C. – NC State opens action at the 2023 Ally ACC Women's Basketball Tournament on Thursday afternoon as the eighth-seeded Wolfpack takes on ninth-seeded Syracuse in the second round.
Tip-off from the Greensboro Coliseum is scheduled for 2 p.m., and the game will be televised nationally on the ACC Network. Andrew Sanders and Ernie Myers will also have the radio call on WKNC 88.1FM in Raleigh and on the Varsity Network app.
A WIN ON THURSDAY WOULD
• Be the 1,018th win in program history (1,017-488)
• Be head coach Wes Moore's 800th career win (799-248)
• Be Moore's 242nd win at NC State (241-79)
• Mark NC State's ninth 20+ win season in the Moore era and its eighth such season in a row
• Mark the Wolfpack's 10th win in a row at the ACC Tournament
• Extend NC State's winning streak over Syracuse to seven games
• Be NC States 58th all-time victory at the ACC Tournament (57-38)
• Secure the Pack's eighth-straight ACC Tournament quarterfinals berth
TOURNEY TIME
• The 2023 ACC Tournament marks the Wolfpack's 46th appearance in the conference tournament.
• NC State is the No. 8 seed, marking the first time since the 2018 ACC Tournament that the Pack did not secure a top-four seed.
• The Pack has played in the second round twice since the tournament expanded to five rounds. NC State is 2-0 in such games as it has started in or advanced to the ACC Tournament quarterfinals every season since 2015-16.
• NC State has appeared in the championship game a total of 17 times and the semifinals a total of 27 times.
• The Wolfpack has won its first ACC Tournament game five seasons in a row. That streak started with a second-round win over UNC at the 2018 tournament.
• NC State has won the ACC Tournament three years in a row (2020, 2021, 2022) and swept last season's titles with the addition of the regular-season crown in 2021-22. A win for the Wolfpack in 2023 would make the team the first ACC program to string together four tournament titles in a row.
NOTING THE WOLFPACK
• NC State won its regular-season finale against Pitt on Sunday to head into ACC Tournament action off of a victory for the fifth year in a row.
• The Wolfpack ranks in the top 40 nationally in fewest fouls per game (12th - 13.4), defensive rebounds per game (21st - 29.1), fewest turnovers per game (27th - 12.9) and blocks per game (31st - 4.5).
• Moore is currently a victory away from 800 career wins and is looking to hit that milestone in the team's 2023 ACC Tournament opener. He would become the fifth active and 15th ever NCAA Division I women's basketball coach to reach the 800 wins mark.
• Diamond Johnson was named to the All-ACC Second Team, and Saniya Rivers was honored as ACC Sixth Player of the Year following the regular season. The all-conference designation marks the second of Johnson's career but her first as a member of the Wolfpack. Rivers is the third Wolfpack woman in a row to claim ACC Sixth Player of the Year honors, joining Jada Boyd (2020-21) and Johnson (2021-22).
• Seven of the Pack's nine players have appeared in at least one ACC Tournament game in their career. Mimi Collins and Rivers will be making their debuts at the event.
• Camille Hobby, Boyd and Jakia Brown-Turner have been a part of a 9-0 ACC Tournament record in their four seasons with the Pack. Boyd and Brown-Turner saw action in all nine of those games.
• Boyd has scored in double figures in a team-leading five ACC Tournament games, most recently being named to the 2022 All-Tournament Team after scoring 12 points (5-of-7 shooting) against Florida State in the quarterfinals and 16 points (7-of-10 shooting) versus Virginia Tech in the semifinals.
SERIES HISTORY (NC State leads 10-4)
• Thursday's game marks the 15th overall meeting between NC State and Syracuse. The teams have met at least once every season since the Orange joined the ACC in 2013-14.
• The Wolfpack has won six games in a row against the Orange. Syracuse's last victory in the series was an 85-75 decision inside the then-Carrier Dome on Jan. 12, 2017.
• The Pack is 8-4 against Syracuse in the Moore era.
• NC State won the regular-season meeting between the squads, which was the Pack's first ACC road game of the year, by two points. The Pack beat the Orange 56-54 on New Year's Day after facing a deficit of nine in the fourth quarter.
• NC State is 3-1 all-time when playing Syracuse at a neutral site.
• Thursday's game will be the third time that the Wolfpack and the Orange will face off in the ACC Tournament. NC State is 1-1 against Syracuse in the previous two matchups. The teams have not met in the conference tournament since the 2015-16 season.
