RALEIGH – Wolfpack women's basketball (19-10, 9-9 ACC) closed out its regular-season slate with a win for the fifth season in a row as it defeated visiting Pitt (10-19, 3-15 ACC) by a 68-63 score on Sunday afternoon.
Playing in front of its eighth sold-out crowd of the year, NC State honored the careers of its three fourth-year seniors — Jakia Brown-Turner, Jada Boyd, Camille Hobby — prior to the game.
Hobby put together the highest-scoring night of her career with 21 points to lead all scorers on the floor. She shot an efficient 9-of-14 (.643) from the floor and tacked on seven rebounds. Hobby was one of four players who finished with seven or more boards, joining Boyd (8), Rivers (7) and Hayes (7).
Hayes' effort extended beyond rebounding as she also scored in double figures with 15 points in the win. She hit 4-of-7 three pointers to tie her career high for triples in a single game.
NC State was able to take advantage of Pitt's zone defense as the team assisted on 21 of its 25 made baskets. Leading the charge in that category, Aziaha James tied her career high with seven in what was the sophomore's third-straight start.
After a tight opening half, NC State pulled ahead by double digits in the third quarter. The Pack used an 8-0 run to go up by 10 (50-40) with 2:50 remaining in the third period and held Pitt without a bucket for nearly four minutes during that run. The Wolfpack led by 11 early in the fourth quarter, but Pitt came storming back to bring the game within three points, including as late as the 1:28 mark. NC State remained calm down the stretch and used its remaining timeouts to advance the ball and not give up another Panther field goal for the rest of the game.
NC State is the No. 8 seed for the 2023 ACC Tournament that is set to run March 1-5 in Greensboro, N.C. The Wolfpack will open tournament action in the second round on Thursday, March 2 and will face No. 9 seed Syracuse at 2 p.m. that day.
