Pack picks up second win in a row
RALEIGH - The NC State softball team (3-7) picked up a 11-3 win over in-state foe Elon (4-6) on Tuesday evening, picking up its third-straight win over the Phoenix dating back to the 2020 season.
Serving as NC State's first midweek contest of the 2023 campaign, the Wolfpack broke the ice in the bottom of the second frame when a bases-loaded walk drawn by Rebecca Murray scored Taylor Ensley to move the Pack ahead 1-0.
The Wolfpack wasted no time building on its early lead, as ensuing batter MaKayla Marbury then fired a grand slam over the left-field fence to push the Pack's lead to 5-0. Marbury's home run was her second of the season, with the first coming in NC State's Feb. 12 loss at Arizona. Her four-run shot was additionally the Wolfpack's first grand slam of its 2023 slate.
The Pack's trademark 'Home Run Mindset' reappeared in the bottom half of the third inning, with Ensley leading off the frame by sending a solo home run over the left-center wall to stretch NC State's lead to 6-0. After Amanda Hasler doubled to right field later in the inning, Bailey Edwards entered as a pinch runner and was then moved to third base on a flyout. Edwards proceeded to score on a wild pitch, with NC State moving ahead 7-0 on the miscue from the Phoenix.
Elon picked up its first run in the top of the fourth after Payton Swart crossed home plate after Bella Devesa flied out to right field. The Phoenix then picked up their last two runs in the top of the fifth after Claudia Penny singled up the middle.
Graduate Katlyn Pavlick drilled a ball past the left-field wall in the bottom of the fifth to tally three RBI's and increase the Pack's lead to seven. Three batters later, Libby Whittaker singled down the left field line, bringing Nadia Sykes across the plate to end the game 11-3.
The Wolfpack's 11 runs were the most in a single game this season, in addition to a season best three home runs.
Freshman Madison Inscoe picked up her third win in the circle for the Pack and added three more no hit innings to her record.
The Pack returns to Dail Stadium on Thursday Feb. 23 at 6pm for the first game of the Wolfpack Classic against East Tennessee State. Gates will open one hour prior to first pitch and the game will be broadcast on ACCNX.
