ATLANTA – NC State women's basketball's three-game winning streak was snapped Thursday night as it suffered a 68-62 road loss at Georgia Tech (12-10, 3-8 ACC).
With the loss, the 15th-ranked Wolfpack fell to 16-6 overall and 6-5 in league action.
Diamond Johnson led the team in scoring for the second game in a row with 17 points, shooting 3-of-7 from distance. Camille Hobby (12 points) and Jakia Brown-Turner (10 points) joined her in double figures. Madison Hayes led the team on the boards with 10 to tie her season high.
For just the second time this season, NC State entered the halftime break knotted up with its opponent as both the Wolfpack and the Yellow Jackets tallied 33 first-half points. The first two quarters featured two ties and three lead changes, with NC State leading for the majority of the opening 20 minutes. After trailing by five points (23-18) after the first quarter, the Pack made up that deficit in the second quarter, aided by scoring the first 12 points of the period.
The back-and-forth game flow was the same to start the second half. NC State managed to regain a lead of as many as five points (47-42, 3:31) in the third quarter, but Georgia Tech went on a 6-0 run capped off by a three before the buzzer. Trailing by one (50-49) going into the final period, NC State scored the first two points of the fourth to temporarily regain a lead, but both teams went cold for an over three-minute span.
Out of that spell, Georgia Tech went on a quick 7-2 run to tie its largest lead (60-55) from the first quarter with 3:45 remaining in the game. NC State called a timeout, and Johnson hit a three out of that huddle, but the Pack could not crack that two-point barrier. Georgia Tech sealed the deal with a few trips to the free throw line over the final minutes of play.
NC State will host its 18th Annual Play4Kay Game on Monday, Feb. 6 when it welcomes No. 13 Virginia Tech to Reynolds Coliseum. The game is set for a 6 p.m. start and will be televised nationally on ESPN2. The game is sold out, but fans who are interested in purchasing tickets may do so on StubHub, the official fan-to-fan marketplace of the Wolfpack
