Team Red Claims 3-1 Victory
RALEIGH - The NC State Gymnastics team returned to action for the first time since the second round of the 2023 NCAA Tournament on Sunday afternoon as the Wolfpack hosted its annual Red & White Meet in Reynolds Coliseum.Â
The exhibition marked the first time that the Pack has competed as a member of the ACC since its lone season of sponsoring gymnastics in 1984.
The afternoon was highlighted by the debuts of six newcomers, with Wells Fischer, Elle Hadrick, Maddie Hall, Katie Harper, Ashley Knight, and Lauren Wright each competing for the first time as members of the Wolfpack.
Hadrick, Harper, Knight, and Wright each competed for Team Red, who won three of four rotation points to claim a 3-1 victory over Team White as decided by guest judges Mr. & Ms. Wuf, in addition to program alumni Meredith Robinson and Katie Zaitz (Cox).
Team Red's roster consisted of a myriad of experience as well, with graduates Chloe Negrete and Emily Shepard leading the way. Sofia Obregon, Brooke Smead, and Krista Zultevicz rounded out the red lineup, with Zultevicz adding bars to her list of events, Smead exhibitioning on beam, and Obregon competing on both beam and floor.
As for Team White, last season's EAGL all-around champion Alexis Ortega anchored all four events while junior Peyton Childs and sophomore Katya Edwards competed in three of the team's four rotations.
"The team has been waiting all semester and preparing for this moment", said seventh-year head coach Kim Landrus, who was excited about the performance of both her newcomers and returners in the Pack's dress rehearsal.
"This is just a little glimpse of what's yet to come, this 2024 team is truly something special and we're excited to go out in January and compete in the ACC."
NC State Gymnastics will begin its regular season slate on Saturday, Jan. 6, with a dual meet at Georgia, while a new era of ACC competition will kick off on Friday, Jan. 19, when the Pack travels to in-state foe North Carolina for its first of six ACC dual contests.
