RALEIGH, N.C. – NC State women's soccer closes out its 2023 schedule on Thursday night at No. 1 Florida State. Kickoff for Thursday's game at Seminole Soccer Complex is set for 7 p.m. and will be streamed live on ACC Network Extra.
LAST TIME OUT
NC State dropped its home finale 1-0 to No. 12 Notre Dame on Sunday afternoon at Dail Soccer Stadium. The setback snapped NC State's three-match unbeaten streak and eliminated the Wolfpack from ACC Tournament contention. Freshman Hannah Jibril almost provided the opening goal in the 57th minute off a counter attack, sprinting down the right flank before firing her right-footed shot on goal. Notre Dame goalkeeper Atlee Olofson made the save and kept the game scoreless. In the 66th minute, Leah Klenke scored the game's only goal off a corner kick delivery from Morgan Roy and Eva Gaetino. The goal ended NC State's shutout streak at 271 minutes, spanning all the way back to the Pack's 2-1 victory over Virginia on Oct. 8.
SERIES HISTORY
NC State and Florida State will face off for the 25th time on Thursday night. A few notes tracking the Pack's season finale are listed below:
• The Wolfpack and Seminoles meet Thursday for the first time since Oct. 13, 2018, in Tallahassee. NC State rescued a point via Taylor Porter's last-second header with less than five seconds left of the clock. NC State goalkeeper Sydney Wootten made 16 saves, including four in overtime, to help the Wolfpack record a 1-1 draw.
• NC State won the first matchup in the series 3-0 on Oct. 23, 1995, in Raleigh. The Pack's shutout victory over the Seminoles was the team's fifth win during a nine-game winning streak. NC State finished the 1995 season with a 19-5 record and an appearance in the NCAA Quarterfinals.
• The Wolfpack's most recent victory over Florida State came in a 2-1 win on Oct. 25, 1998, in Raleigh.
• Florida State leads the all-time series 18-3-3.
SCOUTING THE SEMINOLES
Florida State (13-0-1) enters Thursday's regular season finale undefeated, clinching at least a share of the ACC regular season title with Sunday's 4-0 win at Duke. The Seminoles have dropped points only once this season in Sept. 24's 3-3 draw at then-No. 1 North Carolina. FSU ranks first in the nation in assists per game (3.79), points per game (10.21) and win-loss percentage (.964). Florida State also ranks fourth nationally with 3.21 goals scored per game. Onyi Echegini leads Florida State with 11 goals and 25 points, while Taylor Huff leads the team with 10 assists. Five Florida State student-athletes have accumulated 10 points or more with three of them (Echegini, Jordynn Dudley and Huff) each tallying 20 or more apiece so far this season.
NEW RECORD (AGAIN) AT THE DAIL
One in, one out. That was the attendance situation on Sept. 30 for NC State's record-breaking crowd against Tobacco Road rival and top-ranked North Carolina. Before halftime, Dail Soccer Stadium hit fire marshal capacity at 3,972 fans. Fans outside the stadium were only allowed in if fans inside the facility exited for a one-to-one swap.
The record crowd of 3,972 shatters the previous record set on Sept. 7 against Michigan State (2,506). On that night, the first 200 students received Barbie-themed T-shirts for "Barbie Night" at Dail Soccer Stadium. That new record shattered the previous total (2,023 against UNC on Oct. 1, 2010) by over 450 people.
Overall, NC State ranks 14th nationally in cumulative attendance with 11,540 fans attending games at The Dail this season. The mark ranks third among all ACC programs, while the Pack's average attendance of 1,282 ranks 16th nationally and fourth among all ACC teams.
NC State's season attendance number finished at 11,540 (1,282 per game), a new NC State women's soccer single-season record at Dail Soccer Stadium (home of NC State men's and women's soccer since 2008). NC State women's soccer finished with over 10,000 fans and 1,000 fans per game attending games at The Dail this season, both of which are firsts in program history.
STANDARD OF EXCELLENCE
NC State's sustained success has garnered national attention as the Wolfpack ranked No. 15 in SoccerWire's 2023 list of Top 50 Current NCAA Women's Soccer Programs. The rankings were based on a combination of final United Soccer Coaches Polls and Rating Percentage Index (RPI) from each season, with bonuses awarded for NCAA Tournament qualification and College Cup victories.
