RALEIGH, N.C. – The Wolfpack volleyball team (15-4, 5-3) swept Atlantic Coast Conference foe Virginia Tech (11-8, 1-7) Sunday afternoon in Reynolds Coliseum. NC State remains undefeated in Reynolds this season, advancing to 9-0 when playing on its home court.
The Pack jumped out to a lead in set one that the Hokies were unable to top. Virginia Tech made several efforts to try and minimize the lead NC State built, but the Pack took set one 25-15. Junior Naomi Cabello recorded her 10th service ace of the season on the team's eighth point -- she finished the evening adding 12 assists to her stat line.
The Hokies called an early timeout in set two after NC State took a 6-1 lead to open the frame. Tech continued to struggle, at one point giving the Pack an automatic point due to being out of rotation. Tech did minimize NC State's lead to five, but the Pack responded with a 5-1 run to end the set on top, 25-16. The Wolfpack is the fifth team this season to hold the Hokies to less than 20 points in at least one set.
NC State was unstoppable to start the third, leading 22-9 at one point. The Hokies managed to find a weak spot in the Wolfpack defense and rallied back from the 13 point deficit to shock NC State and force head coach Luka Slabe to use both timeouts to help the Pack regroup. NC State later took the set 25-20, despite the Hokies late efforts.
Sophomore Ava Brizard led the way with 13 kills and finished the afternoon with a .322 hitting percentage. Leading the way defensively, Jada Allen tallied six blocks, with Martyna Leoniak adding four, in addition to eight kills on the afternoon. Senior middle blocker Riley Shaak recorded six kills on nine attempts and no errors to finish with a .667 hitting percentage, her highest this season. Fifth year setter Kristen McDaniel tallied 21 assists and two service aces in the outing.
The Pack will return to Reynolds Coliseum on Friday Oct. 20 to take on No. 8 Pitt at 7pm and Virginia on Oct. 22 at 1pm. Both matches will be broadcast on ACCNX.
