RALEIGH – No. 10 NC State women's basketball (12-3, 2-2) opened the home portion of its 2023 slate with a 79-71 loss to Boston College (12-5, 2-2) on Thursday evening in Reynolds Coliseum.
Boston College jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead, but NC State sparked a 9-1 run of its own to move ahead 10-5. From that point on, the first half proved to be a back-and-forth affair that saw eight ties and ten lead changes over 20 minutes of action. While the Pack stretched its lead to as many as ten points in the second period (29-19), neither squad could create separation as the Eagles responded with a 12-0 run to retake the lead after NC State's early spurt in the second quarter.
The two ACC foes headed into halftime knotted at 35-35. Boston College scored the first six of the third quarter and never trailed again. The Eagles extended their lead to as many as 11 points in the third quarter, but the Pack dialed up its full-court press to generate an 8-0 run that spanned 34 seconds of action late in the third quarter.
While NC State trimmed Boston College's lead to one point twice in the fourth quarter, the Pack posted just four points over the final four minutes of play, which was enough for the Eagles to ice their first win in the series since 2015.
Jada Boyd posted a season-high 20 points on the night, Diamond Johnson added 18 and Saniya Rivers finished with 12. Rivers flirted with a triple-double, also leading the team with eight rebounds and a career-high eight steals. Johnson passed out a team-best four assists in her first action in nearly a month.
NC State is at home again on Sunday, Jan. 8 for a matchup against the Virginia Cavaliers. Tip-off from Reynolds Coliseum is set for 3 p.m. on the ACC's Regional Sports Networks, and the program will be honoring the 25th Anniversary of the 1998 Final Four run with a halftime ceremony. The game is already sold out, but fans who are interested in purchasing tickets may do so on StubHub, the official fan-to-fan marketplace of the Wolfpack.
