RALEIGH – No. 20 NC State women's basketball (14-5, 4-4 ACC) got back into the win column on Thursday night by way of a 71-61 defeat over visiting Miami (12-7, 5-3 ACC).
Playing in front of another sold out Reynolds Coliseum crowd, the Wolfpack's victory was by scoring from all eight available players and four women posting double figures. Saniya Rivers (14), Camille Hobby (11), Mimi Collins (11) and Aziaha James (10) all hit the 10-point plateau in the win.
Rivers added a team-high six steals and four-assists, and James led the way for the Wolfpack on the boards by setting a new career high with seven.
After surrendering an early 10-0 run that gave Miami a 10-2 lead, NC State took control with an 18-4 spurt of its own to move ahead 20-14 at the end of the opening period. The run began with ten-straight points from the Wolfpack to give the team a 12-10 edge, after which NC State would never trail
The Pack's offense picked up where it left off in the second quarter, opening the frame with a pair of three-pointers from Johnson and Madison Hayes to push NC State ahead 26-14. Defensively, the Wolfpack limited Miami to just five points on a 2-of-10 (20 percent) effort from the field while forcing six turnovers in the second quarter alone. The second period served as the 17th time this season that NC State's defense limited an opponent to single digits in scoring during a quarter and was the 23rd time this season the Pack outscored an opponent by double digits in a single period.
After a back-and-forth third period saw the Hurricanes outscore the Wolfpack by one point, Miami threatened in the fourth quarter and trimmed NC State's lead to as few as seven points at 59-52. Despite a strong effort from Miami, the Wolfpack weathered the storm with a 6-0 run of its own, highlighted by back-to-back layups from Saniya Rivers that extended its lead back to as many as 13.
As a team, NC State shot 52.7 percent (29-of-55) and scored 20 points on the fast break, which marked an ACC-high this season for the Wolfpack.
NC State prepares for a Sunday road clash at Louisville, with that game set for a 1 p.m. start on ABC
