Brizard Paces Pack in Win Over Sam Houston

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Freshman outside hitter Ava Brizard paced the Wolfpack in their 3-2 (25-27, 25-23, 25-27, 25-19, 15-13) win over Sam Houston in the team's final match of the K-State Invitational.
Brizard recorded a career high 20 kills, 4 block assists, and 23 points.
Sophomore Jada Allen added 14 kills and five block assists to the book.
Senior defensive specialist Hannah Wander recorded a career high five service aces against Sam Houston.
Set One (25-27):
The Pack struggled to gain momentum to start, but Brizard came in and made an immediate impact. She came in and immediately tallied two kills in a row to help minimize the Bearkats lead. Hernandez brought the Wolfpack within two of Sam Houston after a service ace. The two teams battled back and forth, but the Bearkats came out on top.
Set Two (25-23):
NC State took an early lead and didn't look back. Brizard added six kills in the second set. Despite the Bearkats efforts to gain a lead greater than one, the Wolfpack remained on top. Naomi Cabello and Riley Shaak recorded the set winning block to make it a 1-1 match.
Set Three (25-27):
Sam Houston took a two point lead to start the set, but the Pack quickly shut it down. After a service ace, a kill and multiple attacking errors by the Bearkats, NC State took a 6-3 lead. The rest of the set made for a back and forth battle. Allen recorded back to back kills to make it 24-23, NC State lead. Sam Houston won the set after a service error and kill by Catherine Krieger.
Set Four (25-19):
The set was a back and forth battle, with neither team leading by more than three. Williams recorded a kill and senior Hannah Wander added her fifth ace to the day to give NC State a 21-20 lead. An attacking error by the Bearkats Krieger ended the set and allowed the Pack to tie the match, 2-2.
Set Five (15-13):
Similar to set three and four, the set was back and forth. NC State took a 14-10 lead, but Sam Houston scored three straight points in attempts to shut down the Pack. With the match point on the line, Brizard added to her career day by recording the game winning kill.
Next Up:
The Wolfpack will host Tennessee, Colgate, and Elon for the NC State Classic. Play will begin Friday Sept. 2 at 11am EDT.
