Wolfpack Hosts Rhode Island Thursday to Open 2022 Season

RALEIGH – The NC State women's soccer team will open its 2022 regular season Thursday night against Rhode Island. Thursday night's season opener is set for 7 p.m. at Dail Soccer Stadium.

Live stats will be available for the Wolfpack's regular-season opener. The match will also be broadcasted live on ACC Network Extra.

LAST TIME OUT
NC State blanked Ohio State 2-0 in its sole exhibition prior to Thursday's regular-season opener against Rhode Island. Former Oklahoma and North Carolina forward Alexis Strickland scored the opening goal off a set piece to make it 1-0. Graduate defender and Wolfpack captain Lulu Guttenberger then doubled NC State's advantage when she converted from the spot. Ohio State finished the 2021 season 9-9-2 and made an appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

SERIES HISTORY
Thursday's matchup against Rhode Island will mark the first all-time meeting between the Wolfpack and Rams. NC State's last matchup against an Atlantic 10 program was against its Sunday opponent, VCU. The Wolfpack defeated VCU 2-1 on Feb. 28, 2021, in Richmond, Virginia.

WOLFPACK RANKS INSIDE PRESEASON TOP 25
On Sunday, TopDrawerSoccer ranked NC State No. 23 in its Preseason Top 25. The Wolfpack joins six other ACC schools in the top 25 – Florida State (No. 1), Virginia (No. 2), Duke (No. 5), North Carolina (No. 8), Clemson (No. 15) and Notre Dame (No. 16).

2022 FALL ROSTER
The 2022 roster is comprised of 27 players, which features 20 returners and seven newcomers. The Wolfpack returns 26 of its 28 goals scored from 2021, highlighted by top goal scorers Jameese Joseph (nine goals) and Annika Wohner (six goals) from this past season. Graduate-student defenders Jenna Butler and Lulu Guttenberger also return in 2022, while goalkeeper Maria Echezarreta anchors the Wolfpack in goal.

A TOUGH SLATE
NC State faces a challenging schedule this fall with seven of its opponents featured in the United Soccer Coaches 2022 Preseason Top 25. Two other opponents, Wake Forest and Harvard, received votes in the poll. Three of the Wolfpack's seven ranked opponents in the poll fall inside the top 10. NC State will also face seven opponents featured in TopDrawerSoccer's 2022 Preseason Top 25, all seven of which rank No. 16 or higher.

NC State will conclude its opening week of play against VCU, its second straight Atlantic 10 opponent. Sunday's match at Dail Soccer Stadium is set for 1 p.m. and will stream live on ACC Network Extra.
