RALEIGH – NC State tried to answer a late rally by Virginia but came up short, dropping a 4-1 decision in Atlantic Coast Conference softball action on Friday night inside of Dail Softball Stadium.
The Wolfpack (19-8, 2-5 ACC) brought up what would have been the game-winning run to the plate but the Cavaliers (16-11, 3-1 ACC) pitcher shut down any hopes for the Pack.
Kaylee Lambrecht and Taylor Johnson tallied both of NC State's hits in the contest with Johnson adding an RBI to her stat line. Alaina Smith drew three walks in four plate appearances.
Maddie McPherson took the loss in the circle to move to 5-4 on the season. McPherson was dealing early but struggled in the sixth as she finished with 6.2 innings, two strikeouts, five hits and four runs.
The Pack struck first as Johnson hit a single up the middle, scoring Michele Tarpey from second. In the fifth, Virginia tied the game off a solo home run. The Cavaliers added three runs in the top half of the seventh off a groundout and a two-RBI single to center field.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Pack drew three consecutive walks to load the bases with no outs. Virginia reentered its starting pitcher who recorded two strikeouts and forced a fly out to left field to end the game.
Quick Hits
- Logan Morris was hit by a pitch, increasing her reached base streak to 27 games
- Alaina Smith's three walks are the most by a player for NC State this season
