Amezcua Earns First Career Top 10 Finish
JOHNS ISLAND, S.C. – The NC State women's golf team wrapped up its final road trip of the regular season on Tuesday, finishing the Briar's Creek Invitational hosted by College of Charleston in seventh place.
After Monday's session of 36 holes was cut short due to a morning frost delay and the evening round was halted prematurely due to lack of sunlight, the 17 teams competing finished the final remaining holes of round two on Tuesday beginning with an 8:45 a.m. shotgun start.
The Wolfpack saw five players fire even-par scores on 72 during the second round, as Isabel Amezcua, Natalie Armbruester, and Lauren Olivares Leon each made up sizable ground on the rest of the field.
Olivares Leon birdied five holes on the front nine, improving on her opening-round score by five shots.
Amezcua was able to take advantage of holes that fit her game throughout round two and over the course of the weekend, posting three second-round birdies, two of which came on holes seven and eight. Amezcua played those two holes at five-under par in the three rounds.
Armbruester also birdied holes seven and eight in round two, following up her Monday 76 (+4) with a four-shot improvement in round two.
Lea Klimentova finished the second round with a 76 (+4), while Pilar Berchot rounded out the NC State lineup with an 87 (+15).
Round three began with the Pack making quick moves across the board, with Amezcua and Armbruester each tallying three birdies in their first four holes, and Klimentova adding three birdies in her first six holes.
Olivares Leon later got on a birdie train of her own, stringing together three in a row to close out the back nine.
NC State posted the fourth-best team score in round three, led by Klimentova's one-under 71. Amezcua and Armbruester each shot an even-par 72, which landed both golfers a top 20 finish. Olivares Leon posted a 74 (+2) in round three, and Berchot rounded out the Wolfpack's lineup with her lowest score of the week, an 82 (+10).
The Wolfpack's seventh-place finish was tied for its highest of the season, with NC State finishing the tournament one shot back of 26th-ranked Illinois. The week was headlined by Amezcua and Armbruester each earning their best respective finishes of the season, with Amezcua landing in a tie for sixth, matching her career-low tournament total at 215 (-1), and Armbruester finishing in a tie for 18th.
Campbell was awarded the team title, finishing the tournament at 853 (-11) and the lone team to finish the week under par. Boston College's Nathalie Irlbacher was awarded individual medalist honors with a score of 211 (-5).
NC State will round out the regular season as its returns home for the Wolfpack Match Play Event at the Lonnie Poole Golf Club in April. The tournament is scheduled to take place April 3-4 and spectators are encouraged to attend.
