DURHAM, N.C. – NC State was unable to find a consistent offensive rhythm against No. 13 Duke, falling 7-1 and 3-1 in the doubleheader at Duke Softball Stadium in Atlantic Coast Conference softball action on Friday.
The Wolfpack (19-5, 2-3 ACC) stuck with the hot-hitting Blue Devils (20-3, 5-0 ACC) in the early frames of both games but could not hold off late rallies to take down its first ranked opponent this season.
GAME ONE RECAP
Despite coming back to tie the game, NC State was unable to slow down a fourth-inning rally as the Wolfpack fell in game one.
Kaylee Lambrecht, Logan Morris, Carson Shaner and Alaina Smith recorded a hit in the contest with Smith adding a run scored to her stat line. Maddie McPherson suffered the loss in the circle to move to 5-2 on the season.
Duke took a 1-0 lead off a solo home run in the first. The Pack battled back to tie the score at one off a RBI single by Lambrecht. The Blue Devils responded with two runs in the bottom of the third before tallying four more runs in the fourth to hold NC State at bay.
GAME TWO RECAP
The Wolfpack tried staying with Duke again but the Blue Devils responded with another offensive explosion to clinch the weekend series, 3-1.
Duke went ahead in the second off a solo homer. Reigning ACC Player of the Week Logan Morris stepped up to the plate in the fourth and hit a missile to deep center field, her eighth of the season, to tie the game at one apiece.
Similar to the first game, the Blue Devils responded in the bottom half of the inning as a two-RBI double gave Duke the 3-1 lead that it would not relinquish.
Aisha Weixlmann received the loss on the night to move to 7-2 on the season after tossing 4.0 innings with three runs and three strikeouts.
