Three under-par rounds led to the fourth-lowest round in school history
ORLANDO, Fla. - The NC State women's golf team opened the spring slate of its schedule by finishing the opening day of the UCF Challenge in Orlando, Fla., with its lowest round of the 2021-22 campaign. A six-under par score of 282 on Sunday was enough to put the Wolfpack in a tie for fifth place with Old Dominion, six shots back of current tournament leader Kentucky.
The Pack's score was the lowest for an 18-hole round since March 11, 2017, in its dual match with Hawai'i, and is tied for the fourth-best in program history.
NC State was led by Isabel Amezcua who tied her career low with a three-under par 69. The sophomore used three birdies in her first seven holes to engineer a round good enough to position her in the top ten through the opening round of play.
Amezcua was joined by Lauren Olivares Leon and Natalie Armbruester who each fired under-par rounds as well. Olivares Leon rode the momentum of back-to-back birdies within her first five holes to card a two-under 70 to match her career low, while Armbruester birdied her final hole of the day to finish with an opening score of 71 (-1).
Inja Fric rounded out the Wolfpack's scoring efforts, using 16 pars en route to an even-par finish of 72. Additionally, Pilar Berchot competed in her first tournament on the season on Sunday, rounding out her day with a six-over par score of 78.
Sunday's round was the first time since February 2020 that three Wolfpack golfers finished a round with scores under par, with the most recent occurrence coming at the 2020 Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate in New Orleans, La.
The individual field is currently led by Kentucky's Jensen Castle, who posted a six-under 66 on the opening day of competition. Castle currently holds a one-shot lead over UCF's Tunrada Piddon, Iowa State's Taglao Jeeravivitaporn, Wake Forest's Rachel Kuehn, and Auburn's Anna Foster.
Round two will continue Monday, with players going off at 8:45 a.m. on a shotgun start. Stats will be provided throughout the tournament's entirety on GolfStat.com.
