RALEIGH - The 24th-ranked NC State men's tennis team (4-2) collected a 4-0 win over No. 25 UCF (1-5) on Sunday, winning the doubles point before recording three-straight singles victories.
DOUBLES
The Wolfpack continued the theme of solid starts, taking the doubles point for the third-straight match.
UCF got its only win of the day on court one in doubles with Lleyton Cronje and Bogdan Pavel's 6-3 win over Yannai Barkai and Collin Shick. The duo of Joseph Schrader and Joseph Wayand started things off for NC State with a win on court three. Play was back-and-forth, but the Wolfpack pair garnered the 6-4 win over Rubio and Roddick.
Attention then shifted over to court two with the point on the line. Robin Catry and Luca Staeheli were down early in the contest, 2-5, but rallied to win four straight games to make it 6-5. The tandem sealed the tiebreaker and doubles point for the Wolfpack with a 7-6(5)decision over Trey Hilderbrand and Cooper White.
SINGLES
The Wolfpack carried the doubles momentum into singles action. On court three, Martins Rocens secured the first singles point of the day. Rocens was down a break early in the first set, 0-2, but rallied to win the first set. The Riga, Latvia, native took the second set without dropping a game, defeating Rubio a 6-3, 6-0.
No. 36 Catry was the next to finish in a tightly contested match. A late break at 5-3 propelled the junior to an early lead in the first set. After dropping the second set, Catry gained control of the remainder of the game, earning a 6-3, 4-6, 6-0 victory over Cronje.
Following close behind, Staeheli decided the match on court four. After taking the first set, Staeheli prevailed 6-1, 7-6(5) over Pavel to clinch the team win for the Pack.
UP NEXT
NC State is set to host Presbyterian and NC Central for a doubleheader Saturday, Feb. 12 at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center. The Wolfpack will play Presbyterian at 11 a.m. andNC Central at 3 p.m.
