KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – No. 6 NC State women's tennis (6-0) came away with its third top-25 win of the early 2022 season on Friday afternoon as it defeated No. 21 Tennessee (3-2) by a 5-2 score on the road.
As has become tradition in the early stages of the season, the Wolfpack cruised through the doubles point. The team took multi-game leads on every court with Priska Nugroho and Sara Nayar taking the 6-1 victory on three followed by a 6-2 win by Amelia Rajecki and Abigail Rencheli on court one.
The first two singles matches off finished up nearly simultaneously, with Tennessee briefly tying the team score before Nugroho's 6-3, 6-0 win over Daria Kuczer put the Pack back in front 2-1.
Jaeda Daniel put together a phenomenal performance on the top court in what was a top-15 matchup between her (No. 8) and Rebeka Mertena (No. 14). She faced an early first-set deficit but battled back and ultimately won in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 to put the Pack a match away from the clinch.
The remaining singles matches were in third sets, and it did not take long for the Wolfpack to secure its team victory with Sophie Abrams' individual win on court five. The NC State sophomore came back from a set down to beat Esther Adeshina 4-6, 6-1, 6-1.
Play resumed on courts two and four, with Tennessee adding to its tally on court four and Rencheli rounding out the day with a win on two.
NC State returns home and turns around to host South Carolina (2 p.m.) and ECU (6 p.m.) on Sunday. All home matches at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center are free to attend, and parking on campus is also free of charge on Sunday. Fans are required to wear masks for the indoor competitions per NC State's University Community Standards.
