RALEIGH – NC State was able to finish off the NC State Invitational with a 7-6 win over Central Connecticut State in non-conference softball action on Sunday night inside of the Dail Softball Stadium.
The Wolfpack (14-2) trailed the Blue Devils (0-9) in the first inning but responded with just enough runs in the middle innings to hold off any hopes of CCSU earning its first win of the season.
Logan Morris and Taylor Johnson both turned in perfect 2-for-2 outings with one RBI at the plate with Morris adding two runs scored, a home run and a walk to her stat line. Kaylee Lambrecht posted a two-hit performance as well with two RBI.
Sam Gress improved to 6-0 in the circle after tossing six innings with six strikeouts. Aisha Weixlmann came into the game and shut the door for her second save of the season.
Central Connecticut put up two runs in the first inning off a two-RBI double down the left field line by Bri Walker. The Pack responded in the second with Lambrecht hitting a two-RBI single through the left side to knot the game at two.
In the third, the Wolfpack capitalized off CCSU's defensive miscues and scored four runs without garnering a hit to take a 6-2 lead. Morris was responsible for NC State's final run in the fourth as she hit a line-drive home run to left field, her fourth of the season, to increase the Wolfpack's lead to 7-2.
The Blue Devils did not give up hope as Meg Dugas hit a two-out bases-clearing triple before Molly Bruyns hit an RBI-single up the middle to bring CCSU within one, 7-6 after five. Despite the late momentum, NC State was able to retire six of the next seven batters to hold on and earn its 14th win of the season.
