GREENSBORO, N.C. – Jaeda Daniel of the eighth-ranked NC State women's tennis team (5-0) has been named ACC Player of the Week after going unbeaten in the Wolfpack's ITA Kickoff Weekend matches on Saturday and Sunday.
Daniel went 2-0 in both singles and doubles action as she helped NC State sweep both Penn State and Wake Forest by 4-0 scores. With the victories, the Wolfpack punched its ticket to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships for the third time in program history.
Playing at the No. 1 singles spot, Daniel did not drop a set on the weekend. The Wolfpack graduate student, who is ranked eighth nationally in singles, beat Sofiya Cheklystova (Penn State) 6-4, 6-0 to kick things off and followed with a 6-3, 6-2 decision over No. 35 Carolyn Campana (Wake Forest). The victory over Campana was Daniel's fourth win over a ranked opponent this season and first in dual match play.
Daniel also added a ranked doubles win with partner Nell Miller, their first of the season. The duo defeated 15th-ranked Samantha Martinelli and Casie Wooten of Wake Forest by a 6-1 count and also won their match against Penn State.
Before heading to Madison, Wis., for the national tournament Feb. 11-14, NC State will make the trip to Tennessee on Friday, Feb. 4 and will host South Carolina and East Carolina on Sunday, Feb. 6.
