Dunn Named to First-Team, Shimko Named to Second-Team
RALEIGH, N.C. – NC State's Christopher Dunn and Joe Shimko were tabbed All-Americans Wednesday morning by the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA). Dunn earned first-team honors, while Shimko earned second-team accolades.
Dunn, the winner of the 2022 Lou Groza Place-Kicker Award, has now earned six All-America accolades following a record-setting season with the Wolfpack. The Lexington native has earned All-America honors from the AP, The Athletic, CBS Sports, the FWAA and now the AFCA. Dunn was also tabbed a Walter Camp All-American just hours after being named the Groza winner on Thursday night.
Dunn set new ACC records in points scored (479) and field goals (93) in 2022. He also leads the ACC and ranks second nationally in field goal percentage (.960). The graduate student is the first NC State kicker to earn All-America accolades in 26 years, as Marc Primanti earned the honor the same year he won the Groza, 1996.
Shimko, a junior long snapper from Belmar, New Jersey, has snapped for every placekick since the beginning of the 2019 season. He boasts 236 long snaps and 235 short snaps (471 total snaps) without a bad snap in his career.
The Pack's long snapper was named to the 2022 Patrick Mannelly Award semifinalist list, which is an honor awarded to the nation's top long snapper. In the Pack's 27-14 win over Texas Tech, Shimko recovered a fumbled return. Shimko's recovery led to one of Dunn's 24 successful field goal makes on the season.
In 2021, Shimko was named a fourth-team All-American according to Phil Steele. He has also exceled in the classroom as a four-time ACC Academic Honor Roll honoree.
Off the field, Shimko raised $160,000 in a fundraiser over the summer for the Monmouth Ocean Foundation for Children and the Red Bank Food Bank in his home state of New Jersey. He raised so much money that he was able to take $25,000 and donate it to GiGi's Playhouse – a down syndrome achievement center in Raleigh.
